Senior Cosmetic Chemist – Compounding & Dispensing

Job Description

Purpose of the Role:



To lead the formulation, compounding, and scale-up of cosmetic products, ensuring product performance, safety, and compliance with applicable industry standards. This role bridges R&D with manufacturing and provides technical expertise during the transfer of formulations to full-scale production.

Key Responsibilities:



Formulation Development:

Research and develop new cosmetic products (e.g., skincare, haircare, toiletries). Improve and optimize existing formulations for stability, performance, and cost efficiency. Ensure formulations comply with local and international cosmetic regulations (e.g., EU, FDA, SABS).

Compounding Oversight:

Provide technical instructions and lead the compounding process for pilot and full-scale batches. Supervise the weighing, mixing, and processing of raw materials in accordance with batch records. Conduct hands-on compounding when required to troubleshoot production issues.

Dispensing and Raw Material Management:

Approve raw materials for use in production and check Certificate of Analysis (COA) data. Review and approve dispensing logs and material traceability records. Oversee handling of sensitive and active ingredients to ensure potency and safety.

Testing & Quality:

Conduct physical, pH, and viscosity tests on in-process and final batches. Evaluate the stability, safety, and compatibility of formulas. Work with Quality Control to resolve deviations, non-conformities, and ensure batch consistency.

Documentation & Compliance:

Maintain detailed formulation records, batch manufacturing instructions, and R&D notes. Prepare Product Information Files (PIFs), MSDS, and technical dossiers. Ensure GMP and ISO 22716 standards are followed throughout all operations.

Collaboration & Training:

Collaborate with procurement, QA, production, and packaging teams. Mentor and train junior chemists and compounding staff on formulation processes and standards.

Minimum Requirements:



Education:

Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

Minimum 5 years in cosmetic product formulation and manufacturing, including hands-on compounding and dispensing. Previous experience in a supervisory or team lead role is required.

Skills & Competencies:

Strong knowledge of cosmetic ingredients, emulsification techniques, and formulation chemistry. Familiarity with GMP, ISO , and local regulatory requirements. Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills. Ability to manage multiple product developments in parallel. Strong communication and leadership skills.

Pay: R15000,00 - R25000,00 per month
