Job Purpose

  • Using a climate and nature lens to support fulfilment on the bankxe2x80x99s Purpose, which is to use its financial expertise to do good.
  • To strategically guide and implement the bankxe2x80x99s transition to net-zero by 2050, aligned with local and international best practice, policies and country agreements.



Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and mature Nedbankxe2x80x99s strategy and response to climate change and nature.
  • Develop Nedbankxe2x80x99s response to addressing risks and opportunities related to climate change and nature.
  • Mature Nedbank's climate change and nature position statements and related policies.


  • Develop mechanisms to help increase Nedbankxe2x80x99s climate and nature-related ambitions.

o Integrating these ambitions into Group Strategy
o Advise on adjusting products and services and with developing solutions to support clients with achieving their sustainability /climate/nature related ambitions.

  • Meeting Net-Zero Commitments

o Own and drive the companyxe2x80x99s Net-Zero Transition plan (plan should be science-based and include credible interim targets and implementation tactics)
o Understand, develop, and analyse scenarios based on latest climate and nature facts and development.
o Aid in developing sector glidepaths as part of Nedbankxe2x80x99s decarbonisation journey.
o Develop key guidelines, documents and policies as required around climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as nature and broader sustainability issues
o Establish key baseline measures for the bank to monitor progress against KPIs and targets to meet climate change and nature goals and objectives.

  • Stakeholder Engagement

o To build understanding of complex technical issues relating to climate change and nature impacts by presenting relatable, clear and concise information to internal and external stakeholders.
o To develop relevant strategic partnerships and strategic alliances whilst representing the company's views effectively.
o Advise on appropriate memberships and organisations to follow i.e., Net Zero Banking Alliance, IPCC, NGFS, Business for Nature.
o Represent Group Strategy: Sustainability on appropriate committees or working groups.
o Design, implement and deliver relevant climate change, nature and broader sustainability events, workshops and programs for the bank and other stakeholders as required.

  • Research

o Conduct reserach and monitor global and domestic climate change as well as nature regulatory, legislative, systemic and strategic developments to be able to provide effective advice, implementation, support, and oversight to manage risks and opportunities aligned to global best practice.

  • Reporting

o Input into the TCFD and TNFD
o Input into Nedbank's stakeholder reports (i.e., Integrated Report, Society Report)

  • Training

o Building and delivering climate change- and nature-related training and education programs for the leadership and for staff to promote sustainable development knowledge.

  • General

o Implementing and coordinating special cross-cutting projects for Nedbank Group Executive Committee as required.
o Contributing to a culture conducive to the achievement of transformation goals by participating in Nedbank Culture building initiatives.
o Seeking opportunities to improve business processes; models and systems by identifying and recommending effective ways to operate and adding value to Nedbank and broader society.


Qualifications
  • Essential: Bachelor's degree in science, environmental management, climate science or any other related business or science field
  • Preferred: Post Graduate qualification in relevant field such as environmental management, sustainability, environmental economics, or climate science
  • Registered with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professionals



Experience
  • Extensive (more than 10 years) professional climate and nature operational or consulting experience.
  • Management of or involvement in a net-zero transition plan.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working with a range of stakeholders, including business, non-governmental organizations, academic/research institutes, and governments.
  • Experience in financial services, sustainable finance or strategy consulting; and experience in a global organization advantageous.
