Purpose of Role




The Allan and Gill Gray Philanthropy South Africa (AGGPSA) contributes to the advancement of dynamic entrepreneurship ecosystems in South Africa to improve the contexts in which entrepreneurs operate by increasing their chance to scale, have lasting success, and facilitate job creation. Its grant-making support forms part of the Incubation & Programme Unit, which serves a dual purpose, fostering the development of

new, impactful initiatives and supporting the implementation of established programmes. Through grant making, AGGPSA leverages financial assets to make impactful grants that strengthen organisational capacity, increase the sustainability of supported initiatives, improve programme effectiveness, and encourage catalytic change.



Reporting to the Grant-Making Lead, the Grant Officer will be responsible for developing and managing grant investments made by the AGGPSA. Essential skills for consideration include excellent communication and analytical skills, in-depth knowledge of the non-profit sector, and a track record of engaging diverse communities and stakeholders to pursue a common. A successful Grant Officer will be adept at managing a project from inception to completion and have an ability to prioritise and synthesize information in an analytical and systematic manner. Candidates should be exceptionally strong written and oral communicators, great listeners, instinctual information sharers, and network builders.

Objectives of Role



Key Responsibilities:




Actively leading and managing the entire grant life cycle, from request for proposal to grant closure, including drafting grant agreements, preparing payments, tracking milestones, analysing grantee reporting, and developing and maintaining grantee relationships with a particular focus on larger, strategic grant-making. Conducting thorough due diligence including critical analysis of proposals, budgets, work-plans, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, organizational strengths and weaknesses, risk factors and regulatory requirements. Develop, write, and present concise, high quality investmment recommendations. Critically monitor programmatic effectiveness and grantee's financial management of grant funds through review of periodic reports and grantee site visits. Support the success of grantee partners by identifying capacity needs and facilitating and/or coordinating capacity-building interventions, workshops, and presentations. Proactively developing strong, professional relationships and partnerships with key external and internal stakeholders including grantee partners, other funding entities and the Allan and Gill Gray Philanthropies. Increasing technical knowledge in core focus areas and sharing insights and observations with the grant-making team and other stakeholders as relevant. Contributing towards developing systems, processes, and frameworks for the grant-making team and other internal stakeholders. Providing input and data to contribute to the preparation of Board reports, organisational learning, and other communication materials. Maintaining and updating the grant management system to ensure up-to-date, accurate and complete data is maintained for all grants. Other duties, as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications



At least five years family/private philanthropic grant-making experience, preferably in the entrepreneurship and employment sectors. Experience developing and managing multi-stakeholder grant investments focusing on systemic change. You have experience in analysing and reporting on budgets, and identifying risks. Programme management/delivery experience is an added advantage. Postgraduate qualification in development, education, or related fields.

Technology is a good friend, and you have experience using grant management systems.
