Job Title: Civils / Pipeline Foreman - Supervision of Pipeline Construction and Civil Works

Position Summary

The Civils / Pipeline Foreman will be responsible for the daily supervision, coordination, and execution of all pipeline and civil construction activities on site.
The incumbent will lead construction crews and subcontractors to ensure efficient, safe, and quality workmanship across all project components including the construction of a 13.5 km 200 mm steel rising main, reservoirs, pump stations, distribution pipelines, and associated civil works.

The ideal candidate must possess strong technical knowledge of water pipeline construction, civil infrastructure, and structural works, coupled with proven leadership and on-site coordination skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Site Supervision & Leadership

Direct, coordinate, and supervise daily construction activities for pipeline and civil works crews. Lead teams responsible for trenching, pipe laying, welding, jointing, anchoring, valve installation, concrete works, and backfilling. Ensure all work is performed according to approved drawings, method statements, and specifications. Maintain daily task allocations, ensuring optimal use of manpower, materials, and equipment. Monitor and guide artisans, operators, and labourers to ensure high-quality workmanship. Supervise subcontractors, ensuring compliance with project requirements, safety, and productivity targets.

2. Pipeline Construction Activities

Oversee and verify pipe trench excavation, bedding preparation, and compaction in line with SANS 1200 standards. Supervise installation of approximately 13.5 km of 200 mm diameter steel rising main, including: Pipe stringing and alignment. Welding or jointing as per design specification. Installation of valves, anchor/thrust blocks, bends, and air valves. Corrosion protection and wrapping of joints. Pressure and hydrostatic testing. Coordinate installation of distribution and reticulation pipelines and connection to the existing network. Ensure pipeline route clearing, reinstatement, and site restoration after installation.

3. Civil Works Supervision

Manage concrete works, formwork, and reinforcement for reservoirs, pump station structures, valve chambers, and anchor blocks. Oversee earthworks, foundation preparation, and backfilling operations. Ensure correct levels, alignment, and compaction during construction using setting-out data from surveyors. Supervise temporary works, such as borehole equipping, tank installations, and access road construction. Ensure all civil works meet structural and durability requirements as per design.

Academic Qualifications

NQF Level 4-6 qualification in Civil Engineering or Construction Supervision (Trade Certificate or National Diploma). Training in pipeline construction, water infrastructure, or civil works supervision (advantageous). Valid driver's license (Code 08) is essential.

Experience

Minimum 7-10 years of experience in civil and pipeline construction supervision. Proven record in steel or HDPE pipeline projects, including valve installations, thrust blocks, and pump stations. Experience in municipal water supply or bulk infrastructure projects preferred. Strong understanding of earthworks, concrete structures, and trenching operations. Familiarity with GCC contract site practices and public infrastructure specifications.

Technical Competencies

Sound understanding of SANS 1200 standards for civil and pipeline works. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and setting-out data. Knowledge of concrete mixing, curing, and reinforcement practices. Experience in pipeline pressure testing, backfilling, and reinstatement. Basic proficiency in MS Excel or paper-based reporting for daily records. A detailed CV with references from recent projects. Certified copies of relevant qualifications and driver's license.
