Company Description

Venetia Mine is planning to implement advanced mining automation systems to improve the safety and productivity of the underground operation.

We are looking for technically skilled candidates with good problem-solving ability for the position of System Specialist.

The responsibilities of the System Specialist includes all aspects of Venetia Underground Mine Automation Systems including the trackless Mobile Machinery on board and infrastructure systems and technologies, wireless telecommunication, software applications and interfaces to sub-systems such as machine and personnel location tracking and perimeter access control. This includes all fault finding and diagnostics required during the shift.

The typical duties of the System Specialist include the following: installation and configuration of all the hardware and software associated with the Mine Automation Systems server hardware, associated operating platform and application software; supervision of the Mine Automation System maintenance and support activities on shift, and be the central point of co-ordination and providing system expertise in fault finding problems associated with either sub-systems or the overall TMM- and Mine Automation Systems.

The System Specialist works closely with the shift operating- and supervisory personnel as well as the engineering team responsible for the maintenance of the machine platform and other systems forming part of the Mine Automation Systems to ensure that the systems meet productivity and availability targets.

The Systems Specialist is expected to display good interpersonal skills as he/she will interact with colleagues across all departments and at all levels. This includes identification of the client's technical needs, and implementation of customized solutions in response to defined problems.



Performance of the Systems Specialist will be evaluated against the following KRAs:

  • Promotion of the 'Put Safety First' company value through participation in Safety, Health & Environmental reviews, recommending appropriate actions where necessary, keeping abreast of SHE industry best practices and ensuring communication to stakeholders, peer groups and reporting staff.
  • Overall accountability for safety critical components of TMM onboard- and Mine Automation Systems and ensuring that these systems are functional at all times as required.
  • Overall Mine Automation System productivity, cost-effectiveness, availability and down-time.
  • Monitor, improve and optimise Mine Automation Systems performance in terms of production throughput and availability.
  • Mobilise OEM and other backline/offsite maintenance and support services when required.
  • Solving complex technical problems on TMM onboard- and Mine Automation Systems that involve hardware, software and telecommunication issues.
  • Adhere to Safety, Health and Environmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Adhere to legal requirements as set by the Departments of Health, Minerals Resources and the Radiation Directorate.
  • Creating and maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues and customers.
The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Install, configure, repair, inspect and commission hardware, software and telecommunication system components of a diverse technical nature.
  • Manage technical documentation and system configuration files.
  • Upgrade TMM onboard- and Mine Automation Systems with new hardware and software to keep it up to date.
  • Plan preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on TMM onboard- and Mine Automation Systems.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and services on TMM onboard- and Mine Automation Systems.
  • Report and document results after aforementioned actions have been completed.
  • Guide colleagues in service methods and use of tools-of-the-trade.
  • Share own subject matter expertise to enable colleagues to expand their knowledge.
Qualifications

Education required:
  • Grade 12 certificate, or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification
  • One of the following qualifications at NQF level 6:
  • National N Diploma Engineering Studies (preference Electrical/Light Current) (N6 plus trade)
  • Trade Certificate of Competence in one of the following trades:
  • Millwright (Electro-mechanical)
  • Mechatronics Technician
  • Instrument Mechanician
  • Transportation Electrician (Auto Electrician)
  • Telecommunication Technician
  • National Diploma Engineering: Electrical (preference Light Current/Mechatronics/Telecommunications)
  • National Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering (Field 006 - Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology or Field 012 - Physical Planning and Construction)
Experience required:
  • Minimum 5-7 years (post-graduation) continuous work experience in the engineering or mining industry of which a minimum of 3 years must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • Minimum 3 years practical experience in underground Mine Automation System maintenance and support at system technical level
  • Knowledge of SQL database for automation systems.
  • Knowledge of Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 and Regulations
  • Computer literate and proven understanding and experience with ICT/IIT systems, industrial automation and associated technologies and terminology
  • Knowledge, experience and training in PLCs, SCADA and process plant instrumentation/actuators i.e. measurement and control devices.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of TMM/Earthmoving equipment onboard control- and communication systems e.g. CAN bus, machine health and data logging, proximity detection/collision avoidance, task- or fatigue management.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of TMM onboard positioning and autonomous navigation systems.
  • Knowledge of auto electrical circuits, automotive sensors and actuators and power electronics.
  • In-depth knowledge of IIT, Industrial Ethernet and wireless voice and data communication networks.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent telecommunications network qualification.
Additional Information
  • Be prepared to work Contops, odd shifts and standby as per the departmental requirements
  • Computer Literacy - MS Office Suite (Word/Excel/Power Point/Outlook)
  • Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)
  • Valid EB/Code 08 Drivers License
  • Successfully obtain a Red Ticket (Medical Fitness certificate)
  • The post is dependent on the successful completion of the Company's pre-employment protocol such as qualifications verification, relevant psychometric assessments and a clear security clearance
