We are inviting applications for this developmental opportunity in our Department of Finance for a Specialist: Tax and VAT reporting to the Financial Accountant. The role is responsible for the entire Tax and VAT responsibilities at the University. Due to the inter-related nature of the research funding cycle, the incumbent would work in close collaboration with several stakeholders involved in the research grant application cycle including the Department of Finance administrators, principal investigators/academics, departmental grant administrators, the Legal Services Department, the Research Office and the Technology Transfer Office.

The responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • VAT compliance in terms of the VAT Act in Higher Education
  • Monthly Vat declaration and submission on the Vat 201 form
  • Monthly Vat reconciliations
  • Perform Vat apportionment calculations and compliance in respect of declaration of VAT.
  • Review exposure and risk associated with VAT (Apportionment and application of VAT methodologies).
  • Compliance with Audit requirements in respect of VAT.
  • Application of special tax rulings applicable to Higher Education
  • All Income Tax responsibilities for the University and its subsidiaries
  • Compliance with other tax and VAT related legislation
  • Monitoring the University's tax compliance status
  • S18a Donation compliance and SARS submissions
  • Vat assessment of all Grant & Contracts proposals and applications prior to conclusion of projects
  • Analyse all Contracts/Agreements submitted to the Grants and Contracts Office for Input and output VAT based on SARS Guidelines and UWC Research functional codes;
  • Managing and updating UWC's international registrations on donor portals
  • Assist Grant holders with the completion of Donor/Funder due diligence forms
  • Assist with Grant Administration Training in respect of Tax compliance
Minimum Requirements
  • B.Comm Accounting degree or equivalent
  • 2-3 years relevant experience
  • Experience in tax administration and University Research administration would be an advantage
  • Experience of South African tax law and ability to apply VAT rules as it applies to the Higher Education Sector and University research activities
  • Experience and knowledge with the SARS online environment in respect of tax submissions
