Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a full caseload of FD&D matters, independently and confidently.
- Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial and maritime-related contracts.
- Provide legal advice on shipping and contract law, with a focus on international clients and
jurisdictions.
- Conduct in-depth legal research and deliver well-reasoned legal opinions.
- Collaborate with international legal teams, including regular communication with colleagues in
Tokyo, Singapore, and London.
- Potentially train and mentor a junior lawyer who may join the team in future.
- Travel to Tokyo may be required for short-term placement (e.g. a few months) to familiarise with
the work culture and team dynamics.
Requirements
- Admitted Attorney in South Africa, ideally also in England and Wales or with experience in this jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 4 years post-qualification experience (PQE) in shipping law.
- Prior experience in maritime/shipping law/F D and D essential.
- Experience working for international shipping firm (whether a law firm or P and I club) is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cases independently and take initiative.
- Willingness and ability to work remotely while collaborating with international teams.
- Open to occasional international travel.
