An exciting opportunity exists for a SHE Officer at NATIONAL BRANDS LIMITED Isando Biscuits. The successful incumbent will be responsible for the coordination all security, fire risk, safety, health and environmental matters to ensure that this site complies, at a minimum, with all statutory requirements and group policies and procedures.

Key Performance Areas:

Safety

  • Maintain and update legal appointments, SHE committee, permits, registers
  • Assist with coordinating all activities of SHE representatives, First aid, and Fire fighting teams
  • Facilitate site risk assessments and implement actions to reduce risks to acceptable levels
  • Assist with the roll-out and maintenance of behaviour-based safety programs.
  • Display visible safety leadership.
  • Report on and investigate all incidents and near misses.
  • Effective use of the incident management system by training and guiding other to make use of the system.
  • Ensure that all incidents and accidents are investigated recorded and closed out
  • Ensure that all incidents are recorded on the AVI incident management system.
  • Communicate with the DoL when required.
  • Assist with coordinating efforts to achieve site ISO 45000 accreditation
  • Contractor management (Safety files including, 37(2) Mandatory agreements and COID registration control)
  • Ensuring that legal and statutory inspections are conducted and records are kept
  • Conduct induction training for employees, contractors and visitors
  • Conduct internal compliance and safety audits, report on findings, and manage issue logs through to completion.
  • Coordinate relevant health and safety training, supporting the SHE manager, for staff as required, including; first aid, working at heights and fire fighting training.
  • Compile and update documents as required for reporting to the authorities.
  • Keep up to date with changes in current legislation
  • Update selected monthly monitoring reports, including DIFR and incident reports.
  • Coordination and execution of selected SHE-related awareness campaigns
  • Participate in the facilitation of SHE committee meetings in line with legislative requirements, compiling meeting minutes and following up on actions from the meeting.
  • Participate in the periodic review and updating of legal registers in line with legal requirements.
  • Scheduling and facilitation of regulatory-required hygiene surveys (illumination, noise, heat stress, cold stress) and tracking finding closure
Health
  • Liaise with Occupation Health Clinic on medical surveillance plans.
  • Compile and Update tracker for occupational hygiene surveys and Health risk assessment and follow up on action closure.
  • Facilitate and track the execution of site medical surveillance plans, ensuring adherence and highlighting non-conformances.
Environmental and Waste Management
  • Assist with coordinating the effort to maintain site ISO14000 accreditation
  • Liaise with the waste management contractor and report on performance
  • Implement practices to reduce total waste-to-landfill and improve site sustainability practices
  • Collate all environmental sustainability statistics
  • Perform regular audits on the waste area and effluent plant
  • Deal with day-to-day functioning and compliance of waste area and effluent plant.
  • Complete and submit applications for effluent discharge and waste handling permits.
  • Liaise with municipal departments to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and facilitate closure of related actions.
  • Raising purchase requisitions for waste contractors where required on SAP system.
  • Ensuring waste contractor is adhering to company procedures
  • Ensuring that the waste area is kept in good condition
  • Accompany waste contractor if waste needs to be taken to a landfill
  • Ensuring waste manifests are filed.
  • Ensure that different waste streams are handled correctly (chemicals, glass, hazardous waste)
  • Facilitate calibration of weighbridges, and ensure certification is filed.
Fire and Security Risk
  • Assist with facilitating Fire and Emergency response protocols and emergency preparedness of site
  • Assist with coordinating fire drills
  • Investigate all fire and emergency incidents
  • Arrange for and manage contractors to conduct fire equipment audits, inspections, and tests.
  • Facilitate and track close-out of fire and emergency-related incidents, drills, and audit outcomes.
  • Coordinate emergency and risk audits. (Insurance, ASIB, relevant municipality)
  • Manage the execution of the site statutory audit and inspection calendar by ensuring alignment of risk tasks with the CMMS
  • Maintain site ASIB compliance through the execution of ASIB-related findings and fire services maintenance scheduling and
  • Responsibility for the access control system maintenance on site, including the administrative activities related to loading
  • employees on the electronic access control system.
  • Facilitate and monitor security mock drills, identifying gaps and facilitating action closures.
  • Coordinate loss prevention and risk reduction programs.
  • Coordinate the activities of the security contractor to ensure effective management of site security
  • Monitor CCTV system and interactions with ITSS to ensure continued operation of the surveillance system.
General
  • Participate in the compilation and distribution of monthly SHE topics, and the tracking and reporting of the execution of SHE talks.
  • Compile SHE-related communications for posting on notice boards.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure site signage and colour coding adheres to the relevant standards.
  • Raise, review, track and report on SHE NCRs through the site CMMS
  • Participate in the development of SHE objectives for the facility to foster continuous improvement.
  • Assist with reviewing all SHE procedures annually to ensure validity and relevance.
  • Attend production and engineering team meetings to foster a safety culture and communicate crucial safety information.
  • Perform planned task observations on high-risk tasks to identify and implement risk control measures
Minimum Requirements:

Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years experience in a similar role in a factory environment
  • Previous food manufacturing experience preferred
Qualifications:
  • Matric
  • National Diploma in Safety Management or similar Qualification
  • SAMTRAC or similar qualification
