Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its excellence in teaching and research. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy, and a number of world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.
The Department of Medical Biosciences is comprised of the three interrelated disciplines of Physiology, Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology. Housed within the Faculty of Science, the Department offers service courses to the Faculties of Dentistry, Community and Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy at the undergraduate level and across Faculties at the postgraduate level.
Key Performance Areas:

• Preparation, administration and supervision of practical sessions in Anatomy.
• Managing procurement processes by liaising with suppliers and coordinating the purchase of cadavers.
• Supervise the technical and administrative activities associated with the preparation and disposal of cadaver materials, maintain departmental anatomy laboratories and departmental equipment under the Human Tissue Act.
• Supervise the Anatomy laboratory section.
• Embalming, deboning, maceration and defatting of cadavers and setting up of dissecting hall and areas for practical sessions, examinations and workshops.
• Conduct anatomical practicals for various modules in the department
• Undertaking additional tasks as assigned by the Head of the Department.
• The incumbent will work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of an established team.

Minimum Requirements

• BSc Hons or equivalent degree, in Anatomy.
• 3-5 years of combined technical and teaching/research experience in Anatomy, in the tertiary education setting.
• Experience with the management of cadaver-based anatomy courses
• Experience in compliance with regulations and safety programmes for cadaver and biosafety management cadaver management experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent interpersonal abilities.

• Communication skills and computer literacy.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
