The Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Culture Studies in the School of Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, is recruiting a Senior Lecturer.
We invite applications from qualified candidates who share our lens of decoloniality and interdisciplinarity as the animating approaches across research and pedagogical interests. This encompasses interconnections between various professional degrees within the school and disciplines and beyond its borders. These include, but are not limited to, studies traversing culture, identity politics, aesthetics, economics, science and technology, and an ability to engage broadly with these intersections in terms of representation and socio-political, historical and contemporary constructions of power relations.
Minimum requirements:
Candidates should hold a PhD in cultural studies, film or media studies, visual cultures, or disciplinary background related to the core teaching areas in the academic major, Film, Visual & Performing Arts. Candidates are expected to be active researchers with an established publication record, and have expert critical and current knowledge in one or more fields related to:
xe2x80xa2 modes of storytelling across media and cultures
xe2x80xa2 media / cultural studies, orientated towards South Africa and /or a Global South perspective
xe2x80xa2 the intersections of creative and traditional research modes
xe2x80xa2 creative practices and the creative industries
Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels is essential and candidates should have experience in postgraduate supervision.
Candidates should also have relevant experience with administrative responsibilities at the departmental management level.
Recommended skills and experience:
Experience in curriculum development in interdisciplinary culture studies and the creative arts as well as evidence of expertise in the scholarship of teaching and learning would be an advantage.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be required to:
xe2x80xa2 offer wide-ranging teaching across all years of study;
xe2x80xa2 implement student-centred pedagogies for student development and growth;
xe2x80xa2 supervise postgraduate students at Honours, MA and PhD level;
xe2x80xa2 be research active in areas related to their expertise;
xe2x80xa2 carry out administrative duties for the department, school and faculty (including a rotation in the role of Head of Department on confirmation of appointment)
xe2x80xa2 contribute to curriculum design and development
xe2x80xa2 contribute to academic citizenship in the department and school
xe2x80xa2 take part in the intellectual and public life of the university
