Senior Lecturer: Environmental Management

The School of Public Leadership (SPL) is unique in the South African context with its combination of Public Policy and Management, the Environment and Sustainability as strategic focus areas. SPLs activities, vision and mission, with "Learning for sustainable African futures" as its slogan, can best be understood and summarised as serving public value in an African context.

The goal is to provide teaching and administrative support to the heads of programmes, the lecturers and students in the Postgraduate Diploma and Master's in Environmental Management.

Duties:

  • Implementing and coordinating the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management (Hybrid Learning);
  • Teaching at least two modules in the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management;
  • Publishing academic research;
  • Supervision of master's students;
  • Community interaction and service delivery;
  • Providing project management support for the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management Hybrid Learning implementation process;
  • Collaborating with Stellenbosch University colleagues from other departments, and with local and international research partners to conduct multi- and interdisciplinary research that contributes to institutional outputs, facilitates cross-learning and influences environmental policy;
  • Compilation of academic reports, journal articles, books and book chapters based on conducted research;
  • Teaching and coordinating courses on environmental science, assessment, planning, management, policy and governance in the Postgraduate Diploma and MPhil (Environmental Management) programmes;
  • Supervising postgraduate students regarding topics in environmental management, policy and governance;
  • Regularly participating in and contributing to seminars, workshops, and conferences;
  • Leading and supporting processes that foster interactions with a variety of stakeholders in the environmental management and policy sectors, including researchers, practitioners, decision-makers from the private and public sectors, and community members;
  • External and internal service-rendering and social impact.
Job Requirements:
  • A doctorate awarded by a recognised university supported by published research, or an equivalent professional qualification, or another qualification supported by research publications that are comparable with those of a doctorate;
  • Evidence of continued scholarly and scientific achievement of high standing (study and research at other academic institutions are recommended);
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision and the quality of guidance to postgraduate students;
  • The ability and skills in teaching and guiding students with regard to research methodology;
  • The development of study material and the facilitation of learning opportunities for students;
  • Involvement in curriculum development and the revision and compilation of module frameworks (including the development of learning outcomes) and study guides;
  • Assessment of student learning;
  • The capacity to act as mentor for junior lecturers in the Department and to provide guidance and advice on teaching and research;
  • The results of undergraduate and postgraduate student feedback;
  • The ability to plan and conduct research projects;
  • Knowledge of the subject, research capacity and skill should already be developed to the extent that guidance can be given to at least postgraduate students;
  • Research achievements should be confirmed by publications, as well as by an assessment of the academic level and quality of articles published from a thesis or dissertation;
  • Competency in standard ICT applications to learning in higher education contexts is a requirement;
  • Demonstratable skills in at least one, but preferably more of the following fields, is a prerequisite: environmental sciences, environmental assessment and management, waste management, urban and regional planning, environmental or ecological economics, natural resource management, environmental law, environmental policy, environmental governance, science-policy analysis, statistics and integrated environmental, energy, climate and economic modelling.
Recommendation:
  • Prior research at academic institutions;
  • Progressive growth in the field of research, as well as experience in participation in and management of research, within a project or team context;
  • Previous experience of blended-, hybrid or distance learning.
