The Department of Biotechnology is recognized for its leadership in teaching, research and innovation; with local, regional and global impact. The department aim to produce outstanding professionals in the field of biotechnology and contribute to the body of scientific knowledge through research and innovation for the advancement of society. To that end, the department teaches actively at the undergraduate level and offers postgraduate studies at Honours, Masters, and Ph.D. levels. The Department currently has a permanent full-time Targeted Appointment (designated groups) Vacancy at the Senior Lecturer level.

This is a targeted position and in line with our targeted appointments strategy, consideration will be given to Black South African candidates.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at the postgraduate level in the field of Microbial Biotechnology
  • Facilitate learning and teaching in Biotechnology courses
  • Ability to teach students in Biotechnology and life science related fields
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in Microbial Biotechnology
  • Publish regularly in the field of Microbial Biotechnology or a related discipline
  • Undertake postgraduate supervision at the Honours, Masters and Ph.D. level
  • Provide academic leadership and administration in the department, faculty and university
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach in line with research discipline
  • Raising research funding and implementing externally funded research projects
  • Fulfil any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department
Minimum Requirements
  • Ph.D. degree, preferably in the field of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or Genetics
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching, in the field of Microbial Biotechnology
  • A record of quality and sustained publications, preferably in the field of Microbial Biotechnology
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at Honours and Masters level
  • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research

  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • Planning and organizing skills
  • Computer literacy and e-learning skills
  • Technical professional knowledge and skills in the discipline and in the core strategic areas, namely learning and teaching, research and scholarship, community engagement as well as professional leadership
Added advantage and preferences:
  • A rating from the National Research Foundation of South Africa
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and preferably an international presence in his/her discipline
  • Evidence of how own research will complement the Department's research niche areas (Medical Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology)
  • Evidence of a teaching portfolio in a Biotechnology related field
  • A track record of successful funding proposals for own work
