The Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that could impact the company's operations, investments, and reputation. This role ensures that robust risk management frameworks and processes are embedded across the business, supporting the achievement of strategic objectives and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities of the position
Risk Identification and Assessment
o Conduct comprehensive analyses to identify potential risks across investment portfolios, operations, and business processes.
o Develop and maintain risk registers and risk maps for all business units.
Risk Strategy and Policy Development
o Design and implement risk management policies, procedures, and frameworks in line with industry best practices.
o Regularly review and update risk management strategies to reflect changes in the regulatory and business environment.
Risk Monitoring & Reporting
o Monitor key risk indicators (KRIs) and emerging risks, providing timely reports to EXCO, the Board, and relevant committees.
o Prepare and present risk reports, dashboards, and scenario analyses for decision-making forums (e.g., Investment Committee, Credit Committee, etc).
Risk Mitigation and Control
o Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, including contingency and business continuity plans.
o Oversee the effectiveness of internal controls and recommend improvements.
Stakeholder Engagement
o Collaborate with Portfolio Managers, Investment Analysts, Compliance, and Operations teams to ensure cohesive risk management practices.
o Represent the risk function in internal and external audits, regulatory reviews, and industry forums.
Regulatory Compliance
o Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation (e.g., FAIS, FICA, POPIA) and industry codes.
o Stay abreast of regulatory changes and assess their impact on the business.
Training and Awareness
o Facilitate risk management training and awareness initiatives across the organization.
Knowledge and experience required
Skills, know-how and experience:
Professional certification such as Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or IRMSA Risk Manager is advantageous;
Minimum 5-7 years' experience in risk management within the financial services or asset management;
In-depth knowledge of South African regulatory requirements and asset management industry standards; and
Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel).
Technical/ professional qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Risk Management, Economics, or a related field (postgraduate qualification preferred); and
Certification in FRM.
