Westfalia Fruit Estates situated in Modjadjiskloof, has a permanentvacancy for a suitably qualified and experiencedResearch Technician.

Reporting to Rootstock Breeder, the successful incumbent is responsible for the management of multiple research orchards. This includes the implementation of all aspects related to normal farming practices, i.e. establishment of trees, tree health- (including sprays), weed-, and irrigation management, fertilization, pruning, hand pollination of trees etc. The incumbent is responsible for accurate and timeous capturing of trial data and must have good communication skills to interact with supervisors/section managers where trials are conducted. The incumbent must be able to identify potential problems and have good decision-making skills. The incumbent is also responsible for the management and training of subordinate staff.

Qualifications/Experience:

• Relevant qualification in Horticultural/Plant Breeding/ Agricultural Sciences e.g. BSc, BSc Agric, BTech
• Minimum 3 years working experience in agriculture production / research
• Experience working full-time in a tree breeding programme or in a similar horticultural programme with a focus on plant improvement research
• Experience working in the horticulture/agriculture, research industry
• A valid driver's license is mandatory with an acceptable driving history

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of horticultural principles
• Knowledge of tree breeding principles
• Knowledge of plant physiology
• Knowledge of trees and fruit diseases
• Knowledge of scientific trial layout and statistical data collection
• Sound knowledge of trial management and data collection

Skills:

• Good computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Ability to learn and use new technology and software
• Ability to identify problems and propose solutions
• Ability to work independently and within a team with flexibility
• Ability to walk/work in the field and stand while working in a field
• Organizing and planning.
