GENDER AND HEALTH RESEARCH UNIT

(WESTERN CAPE xe2x80x93 DRAKENSTEIN RESEARCH SITE)

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. It further aims to promote equity, career development and progression.

Project Leader xe2x80x93 1 POST

Duration: 5 Year Contract

The South African Medical Research Council's Gender and Health Research Unit has been awarded funding from Wellcome Trust for a large study, entitled: Fedixc5xa1a Modikologo which aims to describe the impact of severe intimate partner violence on women and their families, to understand risk factors for intimate partner femicide, and drivers of intergenerational cycling of violence. The research will be conducted in the Western Cape, Drakenstein Research Site. This project requires a suitably qualified and experienced Project Leader. The job requires a Project Leader who will lead/coordinate and implement the study, which will include, but is not limited to, the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Lead research project activities at the Drakenstein research site.
  • Adhere to Study Protocol and ensure implementation of, and monitor, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
  • Contribute scientifically to study tools and train study site staff for the project.
  • Monitor, supervise and undertake quality control and assurance on all study data collection and informed consent procedures.
  • Manage and supervise the site's study staff.
  • Oversee and ensure timetable adherence for participant recruitment and retention at the research site.
  • Manage resources at the site, including participant travel reimbursements and incentive cash payments and budgets.
  • Supervise operational activities at the site and ensure it is a conducive environment for work and participant attendance.
  • Lead stakeholder relations and communication.
  • Contribute towards Data analysis and interpretation.
  • Scientific report writing, publications and presentations.
Core Requirements:
  • Master's degree in public health, social work, social science or similar qualification or higher
  • 3 years post-MSc in a health science / scientific environment
  • 5 years' experience leading/coordinating substantial research projects and managing staff and field research.
  • Experience in data analysis and use of Excel and Stata
  • Experience working sensitively with traumatized research participants.
  • Fluency in speaking and writing in English and Afrikaans and/or IsiXhosa.
  • A code 08 manual South African driver's license.
Advantageous:
  • More than 5 years' experience managing research projects or research site.
  • Experience in GBV research or with vulnerable populations
  • Experience working in a team and managing stakeholder groups.
  • Experience working with vulnerable children.
