The Production Manager assumes full ownership for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability of the relevant functional area through the provision of effective methods, strategies and relentless execution.
Duties and Responsibilities
Adhering to all Astec's safety standards, culture and expectations at all times, creating a safe working environment for all.
Ability to communicate well with all other departments involved in the manufacturing process.
Pro-active management, coordinating and monitoring the production processes with a continuous improvement mentality.
Driving Lean, 5S and Safety culture.
Pursue World Class Manufacturing practices to drive efficiency, productivity and Operational Excellence.
Planning the use of resources in the relevant area of the Factory by means of performance management, effective supervision, recruitment processes, disciplinary measures, training needs analysis and work schedules in conjunction with the HR department.
Understanding and employing the company's disciplinary code when required.
Engage team on KPIs and driving hard to achievement of them.
Planning, organizing and controlling work progress within the constraint of available materials, capacity of machines and manpower in close liaison with the Production Planning, Fabrication and Assembly.
Driving and managing relentless execution against the production plan (WTL- work to list).
Being able to make quick decisions to adjust for constraints, ensuring that the production demand is still met.
Able to lead an machining team working on various builds at the same time.
Formulation and implementing departmental and organizational policies and procedures to maximize output
Monitoring adherence to rules, regulations, SOPs and procedures.
Manage employees in a manner that contributes to the employee engagement strategy of the Company.
Formulation of the budget and CAPEX budget.
Applying effective cost control measures to work with expense budgets.
Ensuring that jobs are completed efficiently and within standard times (on time delivery).
Implementing occupational health, safety, and housekeeping measures according to the requirements of the legislation and company policies.
Facilitating inventory counts.
Managing work in progress (WIP).
Ensuring that the Key Performance Indicators for production are understood, adhered to and measured. This includes:
Understanding the importance of quality, productivity and profitability and ensuring that the assigned area contributes to the value chain in this regard.
Ensuring OTD targets are achieved.
Adhering to the planning schedule (WTL).
Ensuring that human resources are effectively utilized.
Managing, maintaining and adhering to departmental budgets.
You will be required to perform any additional and lawful duties that might not be listed in the job. description, but which falls within your grade or grades below as and when required.
Ensuring compliance to QMS standards.
Minimum Requirements
Qualified artisan in a field of mechanical Engineering essential. Degreed Mechanical Engineer or equivalent qualification advantageous.
A tertiary qualification on production management or equivalent would be highly advantageous.
Minimum 5 years' experience in a heavy engineering manufacturing environment.
At least 5 years production supervision / management experience in the same or similar position.
Previous experience in working in a unionized environment.
Highly driven individual with well-developed sense of urgency and a passion for meeting production targets.
Excellent communicator.
Able to make quick decisions in a high-pressure environment.
MS Office.
Intermediate Computer Proficiency on Microsoft AX.
The ability to operate and draw reports/data from the ERP system.
Solid knowledge of the requirements stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Solid understanding of labour legislation and staff management principles.
The ability to read, analyse and understand the reports produced from a scheduling system.
Knowledge of production methodologies including Lean manufacturing, theory of constraints, etc. would be advantageous.
Must be able to read, understand and interpret technical drawings.
The ability to read and understand a set of expense accounts.
