Job Description

Role purpose:

To provide expert technical services in the field of satellite communications to Vodacom. Includes the design, project management and implementation of a wide variety of complex satellite earth station and VSAT projects across the Opcos.

Responsible for the providing support for all transport networks across Vodacom Opcos within the plan, build and operate domains. Be a subject matter expert within the transport network domain and be able to provide best practice sharing cross satellite technologies. To ensure the satellite transport networks are always performing optimally and meet traffic demands as per business forecasts.

Your responsibilities will include:

Performance management support of the Satellite transport networks across Vodacom Opcos to ensure the networks are always performing optimally according to industry best practice
Implement industry best practice for capacity, dimensioning and performance of all satellite network systems across all Vodacom Opcos
Conduct analysis of the transmission networks and make recommendations that ensure resiliency and redundancy as the networks are expanded
Setting of quality standards and procedures against world best practice benchmarks and the management of these processes within the transport domains
Support Vendor and product selection tasks for Transmission technologies, including requirements definition, testing and acceptance.
Identify risk areas communicate to all stakeholders
Technical coordination of technology plans and submissions as well as best practice sharing function
Manage, compile, and update a Vodacom Group strategy for the satellite transport network domains and based on broader objectives defined within the company strategy
Where required, perform cost-benefit analysis associated with specific technical scenarios and trials under consideration
Prepare recommendations as required to your Vodacom top management
Where necessary perform a fault finding and analysis role
C Level Liaison across Opcos for new business opportunities, strategy discussions and presentations within the transmission domain
Extensive engagement with International OpCo's;
Support 9 operations within transmission to drive the company satellite strategy across all our OPCOS's by ensuring the best technology road map and partnerships are in place.
Provide satellite deployment and support across all our 9 markets to connect both mobile and enterprise customers.
Drive partnership with different satellite providers to support our technological ambition across the Vodacom group to bring effective and cost-efficient satellite connectivity for all our markets.
Standardization of performance and reporting of the satellite across all our markets.
Develop a Vodacom Group satellite partnership strategy to support all the market.
To engage with both internal and external stakeholders on the satellite.
Assist with continuous improvements by updating process and procedures necessary to improve interfaces between Service Delivery stakeholders.
Plan and design the cost most effective satellite network through strategic partnership.
Provide budget input for the satellite requirements across all our markets.
Prepare reports and presentation to management.
Collaborate with the Solution Architects to perform communications system design, link budgets and feasibility analysis to develop solutions that meet the customer requirements.
Support SCM and VPC led RFP to ensure alignment to Vodacom Group satellite strategy

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

Matric (Essential)
Minimum 3-year Degree/Diploma or BSc Engineering or B.Eng. or an equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification (Essential)

Skills and Experience
Ethernet, IP/MPLS, ISIS and BGP, Ethernet Standards (VLAN, ERPS, LAG) and Ethernet Service Types.
Understanding the principles of design and planning for the transmission networks (Fibre, Satellite, microwave)
Experience of Microwave Link Budgets and Spectrum Management
Experience in satellite technologies and network designs (Essential)
5 years' experience in the analysis and technical investigations, research and fault finding 3 - 5 years exposure to UMTS, GSM and other mobile telecommunication technologies (Essential)
At least 8 to 10 years in the telecommunications industry, with 3 to 5 years in a technical lead position (Essential)
At least 3 years' work experience in Africa and dealing with African operations (Desirable)
Experience in interacting with OpCo's in Africa would be most advantageous.
Experience in large scale network engineering roles essential, preferably to have been within a mobile network environment.
Experience in spectrum management
Multi-vendor skill set in all areas of systems and networking.
In depth knowledge of transmission networks, especially Ethernet and IP/MPLS technologies.
Commercial awareness appreciates the importance of revenue achievement, margin control and ROI whilst maintaining excellence.
Knowledge of industry best practice for Satellite Transmission Networks.
Effective management of own workload and that of a virtual team.
