Purpose of Job

The purpose of the role as design engineer is to be able to perform actual mechanical design activities and review and verify other's designs in any or all of the specialized fields of heat exchanger design and fabrication; pressure vessel design, fabrication and repair; storage tank design, fabrication and repair, piping systems design and fabrication

The role shall be able to manage / execute the design, engineering, development and modification of complex and / or specialised pressure equipment in accordance with established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements.

The Principal Specialist Mechanical Engineer will also oversee the functional development of mechanical engineers.

Manage / execute the design, engineering, development and modification of complex and / or specialised pressure equipment in accordance with established engineering principles and standards to satisfy business requirements.

Broad understanding of Fitness-for service general principles and standards. To be able to manage / execute complex Fitness-for service assessments and coach and train others. Benchmark existing tools on Fitness for service assessments and implement best practices within the organisation. Develop Fitness-for service standards in this regard for the organisation and audit service providers offering capabilities. Manage and approve fabrication/repair methods, fabrication procedures and re-rating criteria on pressure equipment. Direct and analyse advanced repair proposals. Identify and specify testing and inspection requirements on pressure equipment.

Use and approve work done by others using the different design tools and software packages available for Fitness for services assessments. Be able to coach and train others in the use of the various design tools and packages. Able to design more complex aspects utilising the applicable design tools and packages. Understand the benefits and constraints associated with the different tools.

Recognized as an expert in the company and industry on codes and standards(pressure vessels, heat exchangers, heaters, boilers, piping and storage tanks) and their application to company projects, evaluate current industry trends and represent company with technical societies.

Key Accountabilities

Knowledge in define fields of mechanical engineering (e.g. pressure vessel design, selection of equipment and materials for use in process plants, Pressure Equipment Regulations (PER) requirements, fabrication and construction of equipment, design of heat exchanger, International Health and Safety Standards and Codes, etc.)

Ability to formulate and execute (manage and do) the mechanical engineering scope for projects dealing with the procurement of pressure equipment.

Utilise mechanical engineering systems, tools and standards (own, local and international) in own work and projects.

Create, develop and update of mechanical engineering systems, tools, specifications and standards.

Evaluate current mechanical engineering systems, identify weaknesses and provide corrective actions

Lead and motivate team members in order to achieve positive outcomes.

Entrench an Aspirational Leadership culture within the team as well as in engagements with third parties.

Drive Business results through value addition.

Drive technical excellence in the team.

Actively practice of interpersonal skills required for productive working relationships and to work with, or through, others (Engineering Contractors, Construction Contractors etc) inside and/or outside (including suppliers/fabricators) the organisation to execute projects and/or supply of equipment. Critical to this role are influencing, negotiating, maturity and emotional intelligence.
