1. POSITION DETAILS:

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety at Work

  • Ensures a safe working environment for him or herself and their colleagues while working on any equipment;
  • Learn and obtain competency as a Permit Acceptor in accordance with Engie Safety Rules for all mechanical plant apparatus.
  • Ensures that there is a Permit to Work (prepared and accepted) for each job as necessitated by the Plant HSE Procedures put in place;
  • Ensures all necessary precautions are taken by himself and Contractors while undertaking any jobs in the Power Plant;
  • Ensures that all necessary tools are available to ensure the safe working on equipment and used during the performance on all jobs at the Plant;
  • Points out any unsafe conditions to the Mechanical Engineer.
Maintenance Task Planning and Execution
  • Completes all Work Orders generated in Maximo/SAP as directed by the Mechanical Engineer;
  • Generates reports (mainly log sheets/check sheets) as necessary for the maintenance done;
  • Ensures that maintenance of all mechanical equipment is in accordance with OEM Manuals for the equipment;
  • Reviews Mechanical Maintenance Procedures and suggests improvements;
  • Works to his full potential and does high quality work.
Equipment Failure Trouble Shooting and Repair
  • Supports reliable and accessible 24-hour call-out functionality;
  • Attempts all possible means of reducing equipment downtime and ensuring high Plant availability;
  • Performs troubleshooting activities as necessary along with the Mechanical Engineer and colleagues to determine failure conditions and rectifies the defects found;
  • Records and reports to the Mechanical Engineer all rectification jobs undertaken;
  • Works with Plant Operations Personnel for resolving problems encountered with mechanical equipment under the guidance of the Mechanical Engineer.
Reporting and Planning
  • Discussed planned and unplanned jobs undertaken with the Mechanical Engineer;
  • Assists the Mechanical Engineer in planning daily jobs.
Tools
  • Ensures necessary tooling is available at work sites during performance on any job;
  • Uses correct tools for each job;
  • Reports loss of tools or damage to any tools to the Mechanical Engineer;
  • Informs the Mechanical Engineer of any requirements for tools;
  • Ensures that tools are in good working order.
Ownership
  • Assumes ownership of plant mechanical equipment and strives to keep them in the best possible condition.
3. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

Essential Qualifications:
  • N6 with Trade test in mechanical(Qualified Mechanical Fitter Artisan)
  • National Diploma Mechanical Engineering (advantageous)
Experience:
  • At least 10 years' experience in the mechanical maintenance of a large power plant, 3 of which must have been in the capacity of Mechanical Technician
  • Use of safety systems
  • Use of computerized maintenance management system
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of major rotating equipment;
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of motor, hydraulic and air operated control/stop valves;
  • Operational plant or construction site experience is an advantage.
Skills:

Behavioral:
  • Must be a strong team player;

  • Must have excellent organizational skills;
  • Must be able to plan and work independently and take responsibility for plant projects;
  • Knowledge of the kinds and types of equipment installed derived through a combination of hands-on experience and formal training performed in the manufacturer's factory and/or at the job site;
  • Demonstrates skills in the use of tools, test equipment and calibration appliances;
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, basic understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity and mathematics;
  • Must be able to visually read and respond to computer generated data, instrumentation, gauges, readouts and variations colour;
  • Hands on background in water treatment equipment maintenance as related to high pressure boilers, desalination, cooling water systems and water purification equipment;
  • Working knowledge of Environmental Regulations as they pertain to the operations and maintenance of an energy generating facility;
  • Ability to perform First Aid and CPR.
Language:
  • English Language: excellent communication skills both written and verbal;
  • Afrikaans/Zulu/Xhosa is an advantage;
IT:
  • Computer literate: must have a some degree of skill in Business Computing Applications such as Databases, Word Processors, Spreadsheets, PowerPoint and Maintenance Management System;
