Job Description


The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is currently recruiting a full time Masters fellow within Dr Nothando Ngwenyaxe2x80x99s research group xe2x80x93 which focuses on human behaviour in adverse and complex social-ecological systems and the impact on mental health.

This work is strongly anchored in understanding how adversity and ill health shapes behaviours, and the implications of these interactions for resilience and wellbeing when living with HIV. This programme of work has a goal of contributing to the reduction of burden of suffering of mental health for adolescents through task-sharing scale-up interventions. This work is based at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) an independent, transdisciplinary scientific research institute based across two campuses in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in South Africa.

Responsibilities:

The fellow will assume mentored responsibility for: * Collecting data from the field using a variety of methodologies and data collection techniques such as structured interviews, observations, and survey research;

  • Working with and cleaning large data including quality checking;
  • Performing rudimentary coding of data using descriptive labels/codes, developing coding frame;
  • Organizing and documenting analytical results and report writing,
  • Fulfilling all Masters by research requirements as per UKZN SNPH.
Requirements - minimum qualification * An honours degree in a relevant field which may include but is not limited to clinical psychology, medical anthropology, social work, public health or statistics/bioinformatics. Other desirable qualifications include:
  • Record of scholarly publication.
  • Expertise in research design and data collection.
  • Demonstrated track record engaging in fieldwork with a focus on qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Current knowledge of mental health problems and services in South Africa
