Job Description

A full-time, permanent position (subject to probation and performance review) is available at Lecturer level (AC08). The successful applicant will be based at the Faculty of Health Sciences as a appointment in the Division of Family Medicine, reporting to the Head of Division. This post centres on coordination, lecture and research responsibilities across the DFMPC MBBCh1&2 courses (alongside other coordinators), as well as contributing to curriculum development and postgraduate teaching across these and related fields. The role encompasses teaching, supervision, research, and programme development, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary innovation and blended learning.

Key Responsibilities, as a member of a faculty team:



o Course Coordination: Assist with coordination of the MBBCh1&2 courses; contribute to coordination of relevant Honours and other postgraduate programmes
o Teaching & Supervision: Deliver and assess teaching on one or more of these courses, as well as supervise research, and contribute to collaborative curriculum delivery.
o Curriculum Development: Update and develop the Foundations course curriculum, as well as for complementary undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the DFMPC, such as in the HSS and medical & health humanities disciplines
o Blended Learning Strategy: Support the growth of blended/e-learning through partnership with internal university units.
o Student Support: Monitor student progress, identify students at risk, and coordinate referrals for additional support as required.
o Liaison & Quality Assurance: Collaborate with other programme coordinators, administrators and professional staff, as well as with research managers to ensure academic quality across all department offerings.
o Research & Innovation: Design and implement research related to curriculum, teaching interventions, and innovation in the relevant programmes.
o Other Duties: Perform additional teaching and coordination duties as agreed with the Head of Department or Division.

Required Qualifications and Experience



o Undergraduate degree in health sciences.
o Master's degree in health systems science, public health, or a closely related field, OR a master's qualification with substantial teaching, coordination and research supervision
experience (recognising the evolving nature of these disciplines in South Africa).
o Experience coordinating health sciences courses at undergraduate (preferably) and/or postgraduate level.
o Proven track record in teaching, research, and supervision in HSS, public health, or complementary fields.
o Proficiency with e-learning resource development and use of learning management systems for health sciences education.
o Evidence of research capability and publications.

o Postgraduate qualification in health sciences education or leadership.
o Experience in curriculum development for health sciences programmes.
o Strong collaboration and networking skills.
o Deep understanding of the complexity of the South African health system.
