The Chef is responsible for preparing high-quality dishes, maintaining kitchen standards, ensuring consistent food production, and supporting smooth kitchen operations. This role requires strong cooking skills, attention to detail, and adherence to health and safety regulations.
2. Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Cooking
Prepare and cook menu items according to recipes and quality standards.
Maintain consistency in taste, portioning, and presentation.
Ensure timely preparation of dishes during service periods.
Kitchen Operations
Set up workstations with ingredients, equipment, and tools.
Ensure proper storage and labelling of ingredients.
Monitor stock levels and assist with stock rotation, ordering, and waste control.
Reduce waste by using ingredients efficiently and adhering to portion sizes.
Quality Control
Check freshness and quality of ingredients.
Ensure all dishes leaving the pass meet presentation and temperature standards.
Maintain cleanliness and organisation throughout the shift.
Health, Safety & Hygiene
Adhere to South African food safety regulations and workplace hygiene standards.
Comply with HACCP principles and kitchen safety protocols.
Maintain sanitised work areas, equipment, and storage spaces.
Report maintenance issues and safety hazards immediately.
Teamwork & Communication
Work collaboratively with other chefs, kitchen staff, and FOH team.
Communicate clearly during service to ensure smooth workflow.
Support junior staff and assist in training when required.
3. Required Skills & Competencies
Strong cooking and food preparation skills.
Excellent knowledge of kitchen equipment, food safety, and hygiene standards.
Ability to work under pressure during busy service times.
Strong organisational and time-management skills.
Ability to follow recipes, instructions, and plating standards.
Attention to detail and high standards for quality.
4. Minimum Requirements
Prior experience in a kitchen or chef role (1 year).
Knowledge of food handling, hygiene, and kitchen safety.
Matric is advantageous but not always required.
Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
Reliable transport.
