The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) is an action-oriented non-profit organisation founded in 2011. We drive programmes and catalyse initiatives that nurture resilience in nature and communities within the 3.2-million-hectare region that has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. We are seeking a highly detail-orientated Financial Controller who combines strong administrative and technical expertise with sound judgement, to uphold effective financial stewardship across the organisation.
JOB DETAILS
Job title: Financial Controller
Location: GCBR, Riversdale, Western Cape
Employment type: Full-time
Duration: 1-year fixed term contract, effective 1 February 2026
Remuneration: R360,000 total cost to company per annum
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Purpose of position: To manage the GCBR's financial operations through the implementation of sound financial systems, controls and reporting practices.
Qualification: BCom degree in financial accounting/financial management or related qualification.
Languages: English (fluent) and Afrikaans
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
A minimum of 3 years' proven experience in managing project finances, ideally within the non-profit sector.
Skilled proficiency in financial software and tools such as Pastel Accounting, Sage and Microsoft Excel is critical.
Strong understanding and application of financial principles, regulations and reporting standards.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Self-motivated, organised and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
Must embody the GCBR's values of respect, integrity, collaboration, innovation and sustainability.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Maintain and strengthen existing financial control systems and protocols within the GCBR and across its projects, in line with legislation, internal policies and funder agreements.
Process and record all day-to-day financial transactions accurately and in accordance with established procedures.
Maintain and safeguard detailed financial records and source documents to ensure audit readiness and full traceability.
Manage monthly payments to service providers and suppliers.
Prepare and submit accurate financial reports and monthly project statements to the Chief Executive Officer, project leaders and funders within required timelines and formats.
Provide financial analysis and insights to the Chief Executive Officer to inform sound operational and strategic decision-making.
Present financial reports during Board meetings.
Review and update financial policies and procedures to reflect best practice and ensure ongoing compliance with GAAP and funder requirements.
Support annual audit processes, including the preparation of audit schedules, reconciliation of accounts and resolution of audit queries.
Monitor project budgets and track expenditure against approved allocations.
