Job Description


JOB DESCRIPTION The purpose of the role is to oversee and manage all maintenance related activities and personnel to ensure optimal levels of plant and equipment availability, efficiency and to ensure equipment standards are maintained. The role also requires tracking and documenting maintenance events, as well as strategic planning relating to preventative maintenance. The engineering foreman will manage the plant fitters, boilermakers, electricians, technicians, and assistants. The engineering foreman will also be crucial to planning for emergency/breakdown events and ensure that the necessary resources are in place for such cases.

RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Team leadership
  • Supervise and manage a team of artisans, providing direction, guidance, and support.
  • Assign tasks, prioritise work, and allocate resources effectively to meet operational needs.
  • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment, promoting teamwork and professional development.
  • Installation and commissioning
  • Lead the installation, assembly, and setup of new mechanical and electrical equipment, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments and managers to ensure successful commissioning of new systems.
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Oversee the execution of routine preventive maintenance tasks on mechanical and electrical equipment and systems to ensure reliability and optimal performance.
  • Coordinate and participate in diagnosing and troubleshooting issues, guiding the team in identifying solutions.
  • Implementation of condition monitoring activities.
  • Quality control and inspection
  • Conduct inspections and functional tests on systems to verify compliance with quality standards and operational requirements.
  • Review work to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established procedures.
  • Safety and compliance
  • Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, regulations, and best practices in mechanical and electrical operations.
  • Conduct safety briefings, hazard assessments, and promote a culture of safety within the team.
  • Documentation and reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment modifications.
  • Generate reports on maintenance performance, safety incidents, and project status.
  • Resource management
  • Manage and coordinate resources, including materials, tools, and manpower, to optimize operations.
  • Ensure proper storage and inventory management of mechanical and electrical spare parts and components.
  • Collaboration and communication
  • Liaise with other departments, engineers, and management to ensure seamless project execution and address mechanical, electrical and instrumentation issues.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, providing clear instructions and facilitating open communication.
  • Training and development
  • Identify training needs within the team and provide training, coaching, and mentoring to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
  • Promote professional growth and skill development among team members.
KEY REQUIREMENTS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS As engineering foreman, you will need extensive knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems. The functioning of these equipment and the care and maintenance thereof, planned, and unplanned, will be critical. The risks associated with the operation and maintenance of the process plant and all equipment and systems therein need to be communicated clearly to all department artisans such that their work can be carried out safely and without issue. Ensuring maximum plant uptime is an essential part of the engineering foremans role. The management of all resources required to bring this about will form a major part of the engineering foremans daily activities. It will be your responsibility to ensure that all artisans that fall under your supervision carry out their work accurately, and in a timely manner. Ensuring that the plant and equipment conform to legislative requirements also fall under the engineering foremans responsibilities. The engineering foreman will train and mentor unskilled/semi-skilled artisans.
Key requirements and skills (not exhaustive):
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Proven track record as engineering foreman in a processing plant environment.
  • 10 years work experience in the engineering department on a processing plant.
  • 5 years in a leadership position of an engineering department.
  • Experience in installing and maintaining crushers, conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, static and vibrating screens, variable speed drives, hydraulics, pneumatics, overhead gantry cranes, equipment structures etc.
  • Diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to read schematic drawings.
  • Ability to plan and schedule workload.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks effectively.
  • Proven health and safety track record.
  • Good computer literacy skills.
  • Medically fit.
  • Clean criminal record.
  • Diploma or degree in mechanical engineering (related qualifications may be considered).
