Job Description


This key position which forms part of MANCO will report to a Senior Executive in a growing, entrepreneurial, innovative and proactive projects driven Company which is a mechanical turnkey contractor whose customers are mainly in the commercial sector. This local Company was acquired by a leading Multinational a few years ago which has a footprint around the globe. The SA Subsidiary is medium in size (at the moment and will be growing via acquisitions in due course), employs close to 400 staff, most of whom are in the field and includes Project Managers, Foremen and Blue Collared Workers. There is a newly created Subsidiary based in Cape Town whose business is to provide post-project maintenance as well as repairs & services to the Companys customers. The Commercial Managers main role is the accountability for commercial and cost management of projects from inception to completion, oversee & monitor project plans and forecasts to ensure deadlines are met and project costs stay within budget, ensure compliance and drive operational strategy.

Key performance areas, inter alia, include:

  • Manage, direct, mentor a team of 5 Quantity Surveyors and a highly experienced Project Administrator. Build a disciplined, responsible and accountable culture within this commercial team
  • Monitor project performance and take corrective measures when necessary as well as prepare documents of a high quality
  • Establish strong working relationships between the Commercial and Operational Teams within the Company to ensure efficient planning and execution of projects within the set costs established in the contracts, namely, financial management of projects
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that Final Accounts are prepared timeously and accurately
  • Assist with ensuring that the optimum costs and terms are negotiated with Suppliers as well as co-operating with their legal representative to reduce contractual risks and mitigate to acceptable level
  • Accurately manage project budgets in terms of variation orders, scope changes, escalations, etc. which is intricately involved in being in close contact to Suppliers, Customers and the Internal Order Department
  • Manage contract delays, standing time, contra-charges, cost notifications, etc. and focus on project cash flows per project and ensure Claim Certification are kept in line with revenue recognised and aggressively manage expense targets
  • Prepare detailed commercial reports and forecasts
  • Manage key commercial aspects of the project including quantity surveying, claims compilation, certification management, final account negotiations and retention management.
Requirements:
  • An Engineering or Quantity Surveyor qualification, five or more years of experience in a senior leadership role in the Construction/Projects environment
  • A complete and comprehensive understanding and experience of project management, especially project claim to collection cycle and effective management thereof
  • Strong leadership, analytical and communication skills, business & commercial acumen, good negotiator, ability to diagnose problems quickly and foresee potential issues and risks, able to build an effective and efficient team.
