What does an Underwriting Consultant do
The underwriting consultant's key focus is on underwriting new and existing business to maintain profitability while also creating a platform to aid the growth process. Taking responsibility for sound underwriting decisions through mandates and taking initiative. The underwriting consultant will also get involved in internal referral underwriting decisions to provide guidance to contact centre consultants and brokers. The COE Hub is a key source of knowledge and leverage to the business at large. Underwriting is the final gate keeper of the health of the risk.
What will make you successful in the role
Do Policy screenings and manage portfolios in accordance with company policy.
Handle referrals and the underwriting thereof.
Technical underwriting advice.
Effective underwriting of complex risks (new business, renewals, ad-hoc)
Identifying re-insurance and appropriate action where applicable
Providing quality and correct feedback on high level technical queries
Working within higher level mandates
Negotiating with external clients (brokers)
Building and maintaining relationships at various levels within the organization
A good understanding of contact centre processes and SLA
Strong retention focus
Responsible for Risk evaluation and management
Handling of online broker related telephonic requests
Qualifications and Experience
Grade 12
Short term insurance related qualification (min NQF lev 4); or similar
FAIS requirement: 150 credits with regards to Personal Lines Underwriting (NQF level 4) or equivalent
Computer literate (MS Office package) and Internet
At least 3 years current experience with regards to Personal Lines Short term insurance
RE Qualification (Advantageous)
Clear track record in terms of adherence to Quality standard and Compliance
