Job Purpose
To provide technical support to lecturers during classes and practicals by making sure that laboratories are managed to HPCSA standards. Assist learners on a one-to-one basis with their projects and practicals. To ensure that machines are always functional and that they are serviced and well-maintained to ensure the smooth running of classes. To perform stocktaking and do procurement of laboratory consumables and reagents. To manage the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the department and ensure that all laboratories comply with health and safety regulations. To assist in the research laboratory when required.


Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
National Diploma in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification. At least 2 years' experience in a medical laboratory environment. Independent practice registration as a medical laboratory technologist/scientist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

A BHSc/BTech in Biomedical Sciences. Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
Preparation, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment for use in both undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories. Demonstration of techniques and assistance at student practicals. Store keeping- monitor stock and consumable levels and ensure correct storage requirements are maintained. Maintain inventories of all assets in the laboratories. Procurement of laboratory consumables and equipment. Storage and disposal of all chemicals, reagents, media, and specimens in accordance with safety regulations. Maintenance of specimen bio-bank. Maintain inventories of all assets and consumables within the laboratories. General housekeeping of all equipment, glassware, and the maintenance of the laboratory environment. Ensure a safe and healthy working environment. Competencies
Good communication skills. Technical knowledge and skills as required by a medical technologist registered with the HPCSA. High awareness of laboratory safety requirements. Ability to maintain and operate specialised laboratory equipment. Good organizational and time management skills. Support of diversity Teamwork and co-operation. Quality of work and reliability.
