Purpose of the position

The Technical Services Manager plays a key roles in ensuring refinerys technical & management systems, covering inter alia, ISO 9001, 45000,14000 and FSSC, refinerys technical yield / global reconciliations and statistics and information systems are maintained and optimized.

Roles and Responsibilities

Management of the ISO 9001/45000/14000 & FSSC systems

Ensure that the refinerys quality, food safety and environmental systems are adequately maintained via both financial, technical skills and human resour

Drive the culture imperative that underpins these quality systems and provide leadership and direction to subordinates and cross functionally to other departments to ensure systems are maintained

Provide technical direction to other departments that require support regarding the above systems

Align Refinerys systems to stay abreast with changes in legislation regard food safety through the Food, Cosmetic and Disinfectants action (FCD act: 1972) and food safety act(R638) Governing General Hygiene Requirements for Food Premises, the Transport of Food, and Related Matters

Ensure technical standards across the site, namely trade metrology and other associated SABS standards are maintained

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS & REPORTING

Lead the statistics and planning department that provides support to the various manufacturing departments & leadership team

Develop and continuously improve upon the technical reporting function of the refinery i.e., these include production, quality, and environmental repor

Management & alignment of refinerys melt program and production planning in Finish Productions area, liquids and Fructose. This entails aligning production with Marketing demand profile

Automation and management thereof of key refinerys reports that are consumed both centre and at head office level. This entails the use of various refinerys softwares & historians.

External STAKEHOLDERS Management

Facilitate refinerys community engagement forums to ensure relationships are maintained with key stakeholders in the community

Liaise with municipality and government authorities to ensure refinery remains abreast with changes in legislation. This includes the SABS & National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications

Facilitate customer audits and develop strong relationships with customers to ensure sound technical support and complaints are resolved in a timeous and effective manner

REFINERY Global reconciliations & TECHNICAL ACCOUNTING

Drive refinerys technical reconciliations that cover all raw material inputs and outputs from refinery to guide optimisation efforts towards minimising sugar losses.

Facilitate physical stock takes and complete a global reconciliation covering all receipts from raw sugar to final product handover to the Marketing and Sales Division (MSD)

Conduct SAP reconciliation using the above physical stock take covering both finish goods and packaging materials

Ensure all raw sugar reconciliation is carried out and all variances are investigated via the mills / refinerys to ensure minimum sugar losses via transit

Ensure coal reconciliations are complete and validated via monthly stocks takes and scans to verify consumption rates

Legislation MONITORING & compliance

Set up and enforce the compliance of the refinerys operations

Provide the authoritys with the relevant information regarding waste, water and air quality measurements to validate refinerys compliance

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT CONTROL

Provide the leadership team with sufficient guidance to ensure departmental alignment with key legal compliance requirements and strategic foresight to guide strategic decision makin

Providing high quality information to guide the leadership team regarding technical performance optimisation and guide the continuous improvement initiatives via capex and opex alignment with department leads

Management accounting of sugar losses is a key function to guide the process efforts of the packing and process manager to ensure minimum sugar losses to the business and industry

Monitors conduct and performance and implements corrective measures to align behaviours and activities.

Qualification and experience required

A BSc or B Tech qualification in Computing, Operations Management, Chemical Engineering or Environmental Management. An MBA or alternative masters degree would be advantageous

Minimum 10 years plant engineering experience in a commodity manufacturing (refining & packaging), Operations management, legislation governing environment, trade metrology, quality and food safety compliance.

Computer skills/literacy.

A valid drivers license.

A strong, confident, and assertive personality with the ability to influence and persuade others to make contributions.

Strong analytical skills with good problem-solving skills

Good strategic foresight with the ability to guide and influence the broader organizational thinking
