Job Description


Main purpose of the job:

  • The RUKM defines and operationalizes the organization's Research Utilisation and Knowledge Management priorities and tracks key milestones and objectives of the same
  • They will support the gathering, synthesis, and dissemination of information, including evidence-based tools and technical resources
Location:
  • Braamfontein - Johannesburg
Required minimum education and training:
  • Minimum of Honours Degree in Journalism, Business Studies, International (Public) Health, Behavioural, Life/Social Sciences, International Development or related field
  • Master's Degree preferred
Required minimum work experience:
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in Communications, Information Management, or Research Utilisation and Knowledge Management either in a similar position or functionally producing such outputs in another role
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in planning the duration, complexity, and resource requirements of work outputs
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in or reporting on research projects, public health-related programs, or matters of public interest
  • Exceptional (Science) writing and verbal communication skills able to translate hard science into stories to various stakeholder groups across multiple platforms
  • Adapt at working with and/or leading teams, interviewing senior academics and program staff
  • Competent Microsoft Office Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)
Professional body registration:
  • May be applicable in line with the qualification
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
  • Good information management skills, strong project management skills, analytical, assertive, confident, and adaptable
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, produce own workflows set individual priorities, and also work as part of a diverse and multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to exchange information, present recommendations and collaborate with colleagues and peers within the organization and externally
  • Valid driver's license and own transport
Demands of the job:
  • May be required to travel to project sites, typical office environment, and work to firm deadlines which may require work outside of normal working hours (on occasion)
  • May be required to collaborate with and coordinate work outputs with diverse international organizations (donor organizations, universities and academic/research institutions, UN agencies, regulatory bodies, etc.)
Communications and relationships:
  • Exceptional communication skills (both written and oral) in English
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels within the organization, as well as all external stakeholders
Duties:

1. Effective oversight and management of Research Utilisation within the Institute
  • Lead and oversee implementation of the organization's Research Utilisation Strategy and Plan, including key milestones, in consultation with the institute Directors and Senior Programmatic Teams to ensure the strategy and plan continue to support Organisational and Project objectives
  • Provide technical support for RU activities across the Institute to Directors and Senior Programmatic Staff
  • In conjunction with Project technical management teams support the synthesis and curation of evidence and experience emerging from program outputs, routine data analysis, and research
  • Work with relevant stakeholders to produce high-quality, audience-appropriate print and digital content
  • Collate the organizational content into appropriately categorized repositories including Print and Digital content, peer-reviewed publications, blog posts, technical briefs, reports, fact sheets, conference abstracts and posters, and other technical tools
2. Effective oversight and management of the Knowledge Management Portfolio
  • In conjunction with Senior Programmatic Teams and in consultation with Directors ensure knowledge products created are responding to the identified needs, synthesise evidence, and inform the creation of knowledge products
  • Provide input to relevant stakeholders on learning technology and learning exchange activities
  • Identify areas of improved efficiency or effectiveness within prescribed parameters and, in conjunction with Programmatic teams and Directors, institute the enhancements
  • Develop tools to support the implementation of plans and projects to remain technically sound
  • Creation of Knowledge Products applicable to the Institute
  • Identify and disseminate information on technology and learning exchange activities
  • Identify improved efficiencies and disseminate relevant information for application
3. Management of Reporting Requirements
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual work plans and progress reports timeously for submission to Steerco, DCOO, ED, and external stakeholders
  • Project plan the timeous collection and collation of various data sets to enable to collation and preparation of Organisational Required Reports required
4. Capacity Building
  • Strengthen capacity of RU team and Programmatic teams on RU practices and principles
  • In conjunction with Directors extract research ideas for dissemination to next-level researchers (LDF) within the Institute
5. Staff management
  • Attend to all staffing requirements and administration
  • Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilization and maintenance of sound labor relations
  • Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
  • Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action
  • Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organization
  • Promote harmony, teamwork, and sharing of information
6. Effective self-management and performance ownership
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership of driving your own career by participating in ongoing training and development activities
