Job Description


Minimum requirements for the role:

  • A postgraduate degree in the chemical field and/or in economics or related is required for this role.
  • Previous working experience having worked with policy analysis and development environments is essential.
  • The successful candidate must have a strong background in policy formulation, development, and implementation.
  • Must have excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including experience in negotiating.
  • Must have an understanding of the domestic and international policy environment.
  • Must understand global economic issues and various multilateral agreements and their influence on the South African chemical value chain.
  • Must have an understanding of local, regional, and international trade arrangements.
  • Must be available to travel both locally, regionally, and internationally, if required.
  • Previous experience working within the chemical and related manufacturing industries is preferred for this role.
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office suite Outlook, Internet, Word, Excel and PowerPoint are essential.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Monitor developments coordinating business input in strategic areas within the entire chemical manufacturing value chain.
  • Managing the various company's work groups under the advocacy profile.
  • Developing a comprehensive plan to improve interaction with government and other social partners at the level of advocacy and policy formulation.
  • Managing company responses to overarching chemical-related economic and trade initiatives in relation to the economy, from the extended chemical value chain, in South Africa, Africa and internationally.
  • Influencing pending legislation, commenting on proposed legislation, and providing guidance on the implementation of existing and potential legislation.
  • Communicating to company members on a regular basis, including weekly communiques on advocacy and trade issues, requesting input and providing updates on current areas of focus at the time.
  • Networking and engagement with government departments, competent authorities, members, BUSA, NEDLAC, parliamentary portfolio committee and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitating interaction with appropriate national and international institutions linked to the economic and other policy matters, relating to the chemical value chain.
  • Facilitating and obtaining company mandates on various legislation, regulations, trade, and regional and international policies/MEAS.
  • Ensuring consistent identification of issues in the advocacy and trade space, relevant to policy and strategy, and identifying ways in which the company can contribute to leading the right conversations and actions.
  • Providing written materials such as position documents, policy documents, press statements, opinion editorials and speeches.
  • Supporting the Executive Director on a variety of issues, including writing speeches, articles, and presentations, to name but a few.
  • Organising and managing various local and international conferences, workshops, committee meetings seminars and travel arrangements.
