Job Description

Job Purpose




Take full operational responsibility for unscheduled maintenance decisions in consultation with customer airlines, ensuring minimal disruption to flight schedules.



Coordinate all maintenance activities at OR Tambo and outstations after hours and on weekends to maintain operational efficiency.



Monitor aircraft status, manage defects, and implement corrective actions to ensure compliance with MEL/GT16 limits and avoid AOG situations.



Liaise with Production Control, Line Maintenance, and other stakeholders to plan and prioritize maintenance tasks effectively.



Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to regulatory and safety standards across all maintenance activities.

Principal Accountabilities



Operational Decision-Making:

Assume authority for operational decisions related to unscheduled maintenance in consultation with customer airlines, ensuring minimal disruption to schedules.


Coordination of Maintenance Activities:

Oversee and coordinate all maintenance activities at OR Tambo and outstations after hours and on weekends to maintain continuous workflow and operational efficiency.


Compliance and Quality Control:

Ensure all work performed by the team adheres to established procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.


Monitoring and Control:

Maintain total control of operational aircraft by monitoring defects and deviations, initiating corrective actions, and ensuring MEL/GT16 limits are not exceeded.


Communication and Liaison:

Maintain effective communication with Production Control, Line Maintenance, and customer airlines to provide timely updates on aircraft status and potential schedule disruptions.


Resource Optimization:

Be proactive and innovative in utilizing SAAT and customer resources to reduce costs through continuous re-planning during unscheduled events.


Unscheduled Maintenance Management:

Direct and coordinate maintenance activities for unscheduled events, including AOG situations, using all available SAAT resources or external service providers.


Planning and Scheduling:

Actively plan aircraft with serious or potential defects into the nearest repair station for timely rectification and coordinate aircraft changes for hangar maintenance.


Documentation and Record-Keeping:

Ensure accurate and current maintenance records, including dispensations, deviations, and interim stamps issued after hours.


Emergency and After-Hours Support:

Manage after-hours maintenance functions, including spares coordination, emergency response, and notifications of Air Directives, Alert Service Bulletins, and Service Bulletins.


Incident Management:

Coordinate all IOD (Injury on Duty) incidents after hours and notify respective managers of emergencies.


Spares and Loan Management:

Register and manage hire/loan items in liaison with IATP, 24-Hour Desk, and Line Stations, ensuring timely replacement and availability of spares.

Qualifications & Experience




Grade 12 (Matric) - Essential

Passed an Aviation Trade Test in the Avionics or Mechanical trades with 10 years' experience (excluding period of Apprentice training) in maintenance of which 1 year must be in Line Maintenance - Essential

Must have obtained Type II shop certification.

Knowledge and Skills




In-depth knowledge of SAAT QMP and Regulatory Authorities Rules and Regulations (e.g. FAA, JAA, SACAA and EASA).



Must be computer literate - MS Office, AMOS

Good communication skills (verbal and written).
