Social Auxiliary Worker - Home-Based Care Support
Location: Pietermaritzburg (Elandskop area), KwaZulu-Natal

Job Purpose
To provide essential assistance and support to registered community social worker and home-based carers with the delivery of social work services, ensuring comprehensive care, support, and development for vulnerable individuals, groups, and families within a home-based care setting. The incumbent will extend the reach of professional social work services and promote social well-being under the direct supervision of a qualified social worker.
Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities
Client Support & Assessment:
o Conduct basic observations and assist in the initial assessment of older persons' needs, situations, and support networks to help identify conditions that require intervention.
o Provide emotional and practical support to older persons and their families in the home setting.
o Conduct regular home visits and follow-ups to monitor older persons' progress and well-being, reporting findings to the community social worker.
Support for Home-Based Carers:
o Facilitate non-therapeutic support groups and educational sessions for home-based carers.
o Provide basic counselling and guidance to carers dealing with emotional stress or difficult client situations.
o Liaise with the community social worker to coordinate training and development opportunities for carers.
Resource & Service Coordination:
o Facilitate older persons' and carers' access to necessary resources, such as healthcare, social grants, accommodation, and food assistance.
o Coordinate referrals to appropriate internal and external service providers and monitor outcomes.
Administrative Support & Reporting:
o Maintain precise and up-to-date client records, case files, and documentation in compliance with policies and regulations.
o Compile accurate monthly activity and progress reports for the social work manager.
o Perform general administrative support functions as required.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education: A completed Certificate/Diploma in Social Auxiliary Work from a recognized institution is essential.
Registration: Must be currently registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Auxiliary Worker and hold a valid annual practicing certificate.
Experience: Previous experience working in a social services or community-based care environment is preferred.
Skills
o Strong communication and interpersonal skills (both written and verbal). Fluency in English and Zulu is essential.
o Empathy, patience, and a compassionate heart for working with vulnerable people and older persons.
o Good organizational skills and the ability to manage time and multiple cases effectively.
o Competent computer skills and accurate record keeping.
