Job Description


The Shift Foreman is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the mining site during their designated shift. This role ensures that all activities are conducted efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company standards and regulations. The Shift Foreman leads a team of miners, operators, and labourers, ensuring that tasks are completed on time, equipment is used correctly, and safety procedures are followed.Key Responsibilities:Shift Operations Management, Team Leadership and Supervision:

  • Oversee all mining activities during the assigned shift, ensuring operations are running smoothly
  • Coordinate tasks such as drilling, blasting, excavation, and hauling, based on the shift's operational requirements
  • Monitor work progress and make adjustments to meet production targets while adhering to safety standards
  • Ensure the proper allocation of resources and equipment to meet operational needs
  • Supervise and lead a team of workers, including miners, operators, and labourers, ensuring that all personnel are working efficiently
  • Assign tasks to team members based on their skills and experience
  • Provide guidance, support, and direction to employees to maximize productivity
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and morale
Safety Compliance and Risk Management, Equipment and Resource Management:
  • Enforce all safety protocols and procedures, ensuring compliance with company policies, local regulations, and industry standards
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment, work areas, and operational processes
  • Monitor employees for adherence to safety measures and intervene immediately if unsafe practices are observed
  • Investigate accidents or safety incidents and report findings to senior management, proposing corrective actions
  • Oversee the use, maintenance, and condition of mining equipment and machinery during the shift
  • Ensure that all equipment is operated safely and that operators follow the proper procedures for usage
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to schedule repairs or servicing for equipment that is malfunctioning or needs attention
Operational Reporting, Documentation, Training and Development:
  • Maintain accurate records of shift activities, including production outputs, incidents, equipment status, and personnel performance
  • Submit shift reports to senior management, highlighting key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production rates, downtime, and safety issues
  • Document any operational challenges, safety concerns, or equipment failures and report them to the appropriate departments
  • Provide on-the-job training for new employees and ensure that all workers understand and follow safety protocols and operational procedures
  • Identify skill gaps within the team and recommend further training or development as needed
  • Encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement among team members
Problem Solving, Decision Making and Quality Control:
  • Address operational challenges and resolve problems as they arise during the shift
  • Make quick, effective decisions regarding personnel, resources, and equipment to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency
  • Take corrective actions when needed to ensure production targets are met and operations run smoothly
  • Ensure that mining activities meet quality standards and operational objectives
  • Monitor work quality, including material handling, excavation, and transportation, to ensure consistency with project specifications
  • Review and adjust processes to optimize performance and meet production goals
Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A vocational or technical qualification in mining, engineering, or a related field is an advantage
  • Competent A essential
  • Mine Safety certifications, such as a First Aid or Mine Safety Management course
  • Blasting Certificate
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in the mining industry, with a minimum of 1-2 years in a supervisory or foreman role
  • Proficiency in using mining software or production tracking systems (if applicable)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to give clear instructions and provide feedback
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
