Job Description

Job Responsibilities:




SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY:




Identify and assess level of continuous risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc. Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.) Comply with SHEQ requirements (SHEQ Toolbox) Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status

CUSTOMERS:




Ensure Customer Satisfaction Key Customers: All employees at the plant, mine, and open cast.

BUSINESS PROCESSES:




Ventilation




Test for harmful pollutants by means of approved handheld electronic instruments and detector tubes. Measure temperatures and velocities. Determine the pressure difference between two points in a ventilation system by means of a manometer. Analise weather station readings and plot on Occupational Hygiene reports. Determine thermal stress zones by using thermal readings from ventilation survey reports. Give meaningful and practical recommendations on ventilation systems to lessen exposure to the employees working in high-risk areas Give monthly Occupational Hygiene reports to the relevant 12.1. When required assist in ventilation measurements in your area of responsibility.

Dust




Prepare, implement and coordinate a personal gravimetric dust sampling programme and calculate dust exposure risk. Issue and retrieve a Dust-Sampling Train. Determine the dust mass on dust sampling filters. Collect water samples for analysis of dust and chemical content. Design a dust and/or fume extraction system and measure to ensure adequate velocity & or quantity of airflow/extraction.

Noise




Determine personal equivalent noise exposure levels by means of an integrating-type dosimeter. Conduct routine inspections on percussion rock drills and equipment with possible risk of high noise exposure for compliance with the requirement of the Mine Health and Safety Act. Measure noise levels in a workplace by means of a sound level meter. Measure noise spectrum of a noise source by means of an octave band frequency analyser. Ensure all high-risk noise equipment is identified and demarcated as per procedure.

Illumination




Measure illumination levels in a workplace by means of a luxmeter. Report on illumination results.

Temperature




Determine the thermal work environment by means of a wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index. Measure virgin rock temperature.

Pressure




Measure compressed air and water pressures by means of a handheld pressure gauge. Measure barometric pressure by means of electronic and mechanical instruments.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience:




Minimum Qualifications:




Grade 12/N3 Chamber of Mines Certificate in Mine Environmental Control Intermediate 5 years relevant experience in a mining environment, preferably 2 years supervisory experience.
