Overall Job Purpose:
The Senior Researcher is an academic leader in their discipline/s, and a strategic resource across campuses and subject-matter experts to the institution. The Senior Researcher may be a champion on a programme on which they conduct cutting-edge research and provide support for young researchers across national campuses. The Senior Researcher is required to be a leader in research, publication, mentorship, and community engagement. Duties and Responsibilities:
Research and Scholarship

  • Takes ownership for own research output targets to achieve the required A-list for the brand.
  • Performs the role of leader and mentor in research practice and output nationally by supporting other less experienced academics and promoting a positive culture of scholarship within their discipline and across campus teams.
  • Drives and supports research output and the achievement of the annual research output targets at a national level within the Faculty.
  • Conduct original, high-level individual (and collaborative) research.
  • Prepares and delivers high quality papers for submission to peer-reviewed academic journals and conference proceedings.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations at national (and where budget approves) and international conferences, seminars, workshops, colloquia, and other similar events.
  • Participates in group meetings with other researchers and support staff where required.
  • Supervises students undertaking master's studies.
  • Leads, or be a part of research teams to strengthen collaborations and partnerships between ACE and other institutions and among researchers.
  • Designs and leads research initiatives in the faculty that explore areas of significant social value to the society and that are aligned to the strategic imperatives of the school.
  • Collaborates with individuals, private organisations, agencies, public institutions and contributes to the creation of resilient communities.
  • Collaborates with other educational and research institutions, and contributes to policy recommendations, and publishing research outcomes.
  • Supports and facilitates collaborations between researchers in the Faculty and across other faculties.
  • Contributes to public discourses on national and global issues.
  • Engages with communities and publishes ethnographic research reports that contribute to cross-cultural understanding in society.
  • As a long-term strategic goal, conceptualizes, designs, builds, and establishes a humanities and social science research center that is financially and materially rewarding to the institution.
Lecturing (Including Academic Support and Mentorship)
  • Delivers lectures across campuses and across various modes of delivery as and when required (to avoid distractions from core research duties, a junior lecturer will be assigned to the Senior Researcher to handle the marking of assessments, uploading of teaching materials, and attending to students' queries with the guidance of the Senior Researcher).
  • Internally moderates reports that fall within the Faculty.
  • Champions/leads and manages academic development and support for a specific programme and its students.
  • Organises and delivers Master Classes at various campuses when required.
  • Conducts students' support interventions for research when required.
  • Supports lecturers within the faculty with improving their research practices, which may include peer reviews in the faculty.
  • Acts as a brand resource subject expert to institution on modules and programmes of expertise.
Minimum Educational Requirement:
  • NQF Level 10 Qualification - PHD
Minimum Work Requirement:
  • 5-8 years experience in Research.
