Job Description


Our client, the South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a permanent employment opportunity available for a Senior Payroll Officer, based in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu Natal

The Senior Payroll Officer will perform duties in controlling & coordinating the payroll function, prepare and submit monthly payroll general ledger reconciliations, prepare, reconcile, and submit electronic updates, IRP5 and IT3a and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, procedures, and systems.

The successful candidate will report to the Finance Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring payroll governance, statutory and policy compliance.
  • Effective administration and oversight of the payroll system (Sage 300 People) for all SASA employees to ensure accurate and timeous payment of salaries and wages.
  • Providing technical support and advice in the maintenance and support of payroll systems encompassing areas such as salary and wage payments, deductions, time-reporting, sub-contractor processes, workers' compensation, and related areas.
  • Analysing and evaluating complex technical payroll procedures, controls and information and documentation systems.
  • Other Ad-hoc tasks delegated by the Finance Manager
Minimum Requirements:

Education and Experience:
  • BCom Degree in Human Resource Management or BTech Degree or a 3 Year Finance qualification
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience processing a payroll of 500 or more employees. Your experience should encompass total guaranteed packages, other remuneration benefits including fringe benefit tax, variable earnings (overtime and allowances), fringe benefits and taxation thereof, medical aids and retirement funding.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Advanced skills in VIP payroll computer systems, including payroll software and time and attendance systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant acts, regulations, policies, and agreements relating to payroll administration e.g., award interpretation, compliance issues, segregation of duties, current trends, and developments in payroll.
  • Ability to analyse and evaluate work methods, design, and implement 'best practice' payroll systems and procedures
  • Effective utilisation of MS Excel to perform duties.
  • High level communication skills including preparation of clear concise instructions, manuals, and reports.
  • Analysis of payroll data and practices, applying relevant laws, regulations, and principles.
  • Ability to train others in specialised payroll practices and procedures.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and always ensure confidentiality of employee related information.
