The Role:

We are seeking a seasoned

Senior Consulting Mechanical Engineer

with a deep specialization in

Building Services

. This contract role involves leading the full mechanical design and quality assurance lifecycle on large refurbishment and new-build projects, ensuring systems are compliant, cost-effective, and fully commissioned. The initial focus will involve the design, specification, and site supervision of mechanical services for a large public auditorium refurbishment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the detailed design, calculations, and specification writing for all mechanical building services, including:

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning):

Large-scale plant, ducting, and air quality systems (critical for public assembly spaces).

Wet Services:

Design of hot/cold water reticulation, drainage, and specialized plumbing systems.

Fire Protection:

Design and specification of fire hydrant, hose reel, and sprinkler systems in compliance with SANS 10400/SANS 10254. Manage the mechanical scope during the construction phase, acting as the client's representative for quality control (QC) and design integrity. Review and approve contractor shop drawings, technical submittals, and material specifications. Oversee the testing, commissioning, and final handover of all installed mechanical systems. Liaise directly with the Principal Agent, Architects, and other engineering disciplines (Structural, Electrical) to ensure seamless project integration.
Qualifications & Requirements

Education:

BEng or BSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.

Experience:

Minimum of

6 years

of progressive, professional experience working exclusively within the

Consulting Engineering

industry, with a focus on Building Services.

Technical Expertise:

Proven competency in using engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP) and a comprehensive understanding of current South African building regulations and standards.
