Job Description


The activities of this (Senior) Investment Officer will be across the geographies in Southern Africa. This role will involve deal sourcing, business development and credit structuring. There is close cooperation with the Energy team in The Hague, which determines the Energy strategy and deal priorities. The (S)IO will be based in Johannesburg and report to the Regional Manager of the team in Johannesburg. The (S)IO will liaise and discuss potential transactions with the Energy sector Manager and team in The Netherlands (dotted reporting line). The client has a small local team in Johannesburg, and it is important to have an adaptive mindset.

The preferred candidate:

  • Creates new business opportunities, for themselves or others, and can implement innovative (or at least new to FMO) business propositions;
  • Proactively builds strong relationships by understanding the client/partner business, the environment they operate in and the risks and challenges they face;
  • Displays a strong commercial, service and client orientation and can influence a wide range of people;
  • Manages key stakeholders, understands their requirements/expectations and builds professional relationships and trust
  • Keeps track of progress in the development of the client relationship as well as the actual pipeline and deal generation;
  • Has vast experience in the structuring, negotiation and execution of both project and corporate finance transactions, preferably in the energy sector;
  • Is able to effectively strike the balance between facilitating transactions and upholding the companyxe2x80x99s development mandate and E&S/human rights standards;
  • Has an entrepreneurial focus and is at the same time risk aware when needed;
  • Is able to screen potential investments and their sponsors based on sector developments, prior expertise, reputation, financial capability, market opportunity and strategic fit;
  • Is a good team player and coach to investment staff.
The company is headquartered in The Hague with a Regional Representative Office in Johannesburg that covers the Southern African region. The team in Johannesburg works closely with the sector teams in The Netherlands and consists of representatives of all 3 strategic sectors: Energy, Agribusiness, Food & Water, and Financial Institutions (5 professionals). The Energy department in The Hague comprises about 50 professionals focusing on senior debt and mezzanine finance while maintaining close relations with the (energy) colleagues from the Private Equity department.

The Energy sector has been prioritized by the company as one of three strategic sectors. My client has been a front-runner in implementing the sustainability framework within, and has shown to be innovative while exploring new investment sub-sectors such as distributed energy solutions. They aim to build a substantial portfolio of sustainable investments that realize steady and market-driven returns.

The total Energy portfolio amounts to approximately EUR 2.2 billion, and annual new commitments amount to around EUR 450 million. The department has four regional teams servicing our target markets: The East & Southern Africa (ESAF), West & North Africa and Middle East (WA/MENA), Asia & Eastern Europe (Asia/ECA), and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

The Johannesburg Office is looking for a local (Senior) Investment Officer with a primary focus on Energy. Besides, the (S)IO will be involved in general representation of the company in the region.

Requirements
  • Master's degree, preferably in economics or business administration.
  • 10+ years relevant corporate and/or project finance experience.
  • Proven track record in deal origination, structuring and execution in the region (SADC).
  • An existing network in the renewable energy space in the region (SADC).
  • Client relationship management experience and in-depth credit knowledge.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Multilingual (Portuguese or French) would be an advantage
  • Availability to travel.
