The person in this role is responsible for managing and providing engineering supervisory, budget, legal, safety and technical services. This is a front-line management role, based at a PGM-smelting operation. Specifically at the off-gas (SO2) abatement section of the operation. The front-line manager has various responsibilities and key performance indicators (KPIs), mostly targeted at effective and efficient maintenance management. The FLM has a team of artisans reporting to them continuously, and hence the FLM is responsible for the management of this team in all aspects of their performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Operation Management team in developing an operational plan for the year to support the process in achieving throughput objectives
  • Undertake to plan the spares requirements according to the planned maintenance schedule and ensure their availability (with the help of a resource coordinator and planning team)
  • Liaise with the Operation management team regarding daily, weekly and monthly progress to plan, budget, and employee resources
  • Enforcing compliance to relevant operating and maintenance procedures, managerial instructions, OHSA, SANS and GTS-group technical standards. Oversee and ensure the quality of workmanship and conduct regular inspections around the section and the operation so that expected equipment availability is ensured.
  • Ensuring all work is carried out to an acceptable quality standard, safely and on time.
  • Plan daily, weekly and monthly work requirement and priorities with the operational team
  • Identify operational priorities within the section that would ensure the optimization of the section's performance
  • Oversee that the required material, equipment, spares and staff are available to achieve the output
  • Coordinate small to medium projects and routine shutdowns.
  • Budget setting and control.
  • Contractor management.
This role is in the Engineering Department at a Band 7 level reporting to the Section Engineer - SO2 Abatement Plant

Qualifications
  • Engineering Foreman Certificate as per Anglo American
  • Mechanical Trade Certificate
  • Millwright Trade Certificate will be advantageous
  • Certified Competent 2.9.2.
Experience:
  • Two years plus experience required as Foreman,
  • Smelter or Acid plant experience is advantageous.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Computer literate in full MS Office
  • Good analytical and decisions making skills
  • Good organizing and planning skills
  • Facilitate, create and approve proper risk assessments
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA)
  • Leadership and motivational skills
  • Good verbal and other communication skills
  • SAP basic skills will be advantageous
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment used in process plants
  • Knowledge of various materials and their applications will be advantageous (e.g. various steels and plastics)
  • Plant and equipment faultfinding and basic root-cause analysis (RCA) skills
  • Valid driving license
Additional requirements will include:
  • English literacy - speak, read and write.
  • Must be able to do standby for the smelting complex, overtime and if required, shift work.
  • Will be required to undergo a Medical Fitness Test
