The Opportunity
Our South Africa team is currently looking for an experienced water focused Senior Civil Engineer with excellent Project Management experience to join our dynamic team working on innovative and exciting infrastructure projects in Africa. Water impacts millions of people across the African continent whether it be too much, too little or of poor-quality. Unprecedented population growth combined with the impacts of climate change makes Africa one of the most vulnerable regions in the world. We are building an agile and forward-thinking water team to respond to the ever increasing need to develop holistic solutions that will positively impact people, livelihoods, and the environment.
The primary focus of the role is to assist with the successful implementation of a large bulk water supply scheme in South Africa. This role will require you to be proactive to ensure timely approval of the various aspects of the project and to engage with Arup's knowledge base and lead collaboration across a wide network of technical experts.
In addition to this, you will work on a broad range of water focused infrastructure projects across Africa including water resources / supply, treatment, reuse, water flood resilience and stormwater management. You will be involved at all stages of the project cycle from strategic definition, conceptual design, detailed design and through implementation, including technical advisory and due diligence.
The role involves inter-office working and assisting with knowledge transfer between Arup colleagues across the continent. You will play a part in the ever-increasing digital transformation of our business, seeking new ways to increase our efficiency through automation and to offer new services to our clients through our integrated digital approach to design. There will be opportunities to broaden your skills through international experience in assisting with the appraisal and delivery of water infrastructure schemes.

Is this role right for you?
This role goes beyond technical tasks and requires an engineer with a strong project management background. The technical competencies below are a guide and indicative of the wide range of competencies you will apply and develop

  • A relevant undergraduate degree.
  • Professional registration with ECSA and SACPCMP (advantageous), or other appropriate institution.
  • Experience with water focused civil engineering projects which could include pipelines, pump stations, water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Project management skills relevant to infrastructure projects.
  • Construction Contract Management, and African Knowledge.
