Security Operations Manager: Satellite Campuses

Campus Security is a division within Facilities Management responsible for the full scope of security services rendered to Stellenbosch University (SU) staff and students. The Department utilises the services of in-house and contracted security staff. The four core focuses of the Department are to provide visible patrols and response services, utilise security technologies, liaise with internal and external partners, and promote safety and awareness among the campus community.

The incumbent will be stationed at the Tygerberg Campus in Bellville, Cape Town.

Duties:

  • Operational and functional management of the Campus Security Division at the Tygerberg- and satellite campuses;
  • Rendering guidance and support to the campuses' safety committees with regard to workplace safety functions;
  • Operational management, people management and performance management of the in-house security staff;
  • Security contract and compliance management;
  • Planning and executing crime prevention operations;
  • Managing the optimal utilisation of the security technology systems such as alarms, CCTV, and other security technologies;
  • Building and maintaining a positive relationship with the campus community, thereby ensuring that the campus community maintains an informed, balanced and supporting approach towards personal safety and campus security;
  • Forming part of SU's campus security team by supporting and liaising with team members at other campuses;
  • Managing the full scope of departmental administration, including but not limited to, incident records management, crime trends management and day to day communication;
  • Managing the Department's operational and contract budgets in accordance with the SU financial budgeting and control protocols;
  • Building and managing relations with external role players such as the SAPS, Municipal Law Enforcement, and other crime prevention agencies.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Security Risk Management, or a bachelor's degree in a field directly related to Security Risk Management, such as Criminology, Police Sciences, or Military Sciences with at least eight years' work experience, OR a national diploma in Security Management with at least ten years' work experience will also be considered;
  • At least five years' experience as a security operations manager or a commissioned officer in the SAPS or SANDF;
  • PSIRA training and registration up to level B;
  • A valid Code B driver's licence;
  • No criminal record;
  • Proven ability to understand, fluently speak, read, and write emails and reports in at least English;
  • Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • An energetic, self-driven team-leader with the ability to motivate others while demonstrating a high level of problem-solving skills, conflict handling skills and confidence to talk to or present to a large and diverse audience;
  • Good physical and mental health and demonstrate a basic level of personal fitness;
  • Availability to, apart from office hours, work after hours and weekends to guide subordinates or to respond to major incidents on campus after hours;
  • Must use own, reliable transport between work and home;
  • Must successfully undergo a comprehensive vetting process.
Recommendations:
  • Proven proficiency in and the ability to understand, read and speak Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa;
  • Knowledge of and / or working experience in utilising various security technologies;
  • Knowledge of and / or working experience in conducting security risk assessments;
  • Knowledge of and / or experience in event risk management and event security practices;
  • Experience in managing security staff that work shifts;
  • Experience in operationally managing a security team at a tertiary education institution.
