The Rigger is responsible for the precise installation, alignment, and adjustment of rigging systems, masts, spars, standing and running rigging, and associated deck hardware on yachts, catamarans, and other marine vessels. This includes interpreting technical drawings, ensuring compliance with marine safety standards, and collaborating closely with other departments to deliver high-quality, seaworthy vessels.
Key ResponsibilitiesRigging Installation & Setup
Install and tension masts, booms, spreaders, and stays in accordance with design specifications.
Fit and secure standing rigging (shrouds, forestays, backstays) and running rigging (halyards, sheets, control lines).
Attach sails, furling systems, winches, blocks, travelers, and other deck hardware.
Align and tune rigging for optimum performance and safety.
Technical & Quality Control
Interpret rigging plans, technical drawings, and manufacturer specifications.
Use precision measuring and tensioning tools (e.g., Loos gauges, digital tension meters).
Inspect rigging components for defects, wear, and corrosion.
Maintain compliance with ISO, CE, and marine classification society standards.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with boat builders, electricians, and mechanical fitters to coordinate installation sequences.
Provide feedback to designers and engineers regarding rigging improvements or challenges.
Assist with sea trials and tuning adjustments.
Maintenance & Safety
Perform periodic inspection and maintenance of rigging tools and lifting equipment.
Ensure all rigging work is completed in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and company safety policies.
Conduct pre-lift and lifting operations in compliance with safe rigging practices.
Required Qualifications & ExperienceEducation
Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent.
Relevant trade qualification or certification in rigging (e.g., Lifting Machinery Operators (LMO), Rigger Trade Test Certificate).
Additional marine or yacht rigging certification preferred (e.g., IYT, ABYC Rigging Standards Training).
Experience
Minimum
3-5 years
experience as a Rigger, preferably in the marine or yacht-building industry.
Proven experience in mast stepping, rigging installation, and sail handling systems.
Knowledge of composite, aluminum, and stainless-steel rigging components.
Familiarity with hydraulic rigging systems and furling gear is advantageous.
Skills & Competencies
