Job Profile:



Reporting to the Lead Designer of the Project, The Systems Engineer will be Designing & Detailing of all systems (Mechanical and Electrical) for new products.

Duties and Responsibilities: Engineering and Design



Design all systems and systems components to meet the manufacturers guidelines, functional requirements, and certification standards, ensuring suitability for manufacture, serviceability and that designs are within cost parameters.

Create CAD Models (2D & 3D) & complete calculations for the design, specification of systems components and equipment for new product design or engineering change requests.

Complete costing analyses and material forecasts for prototype development

Research new parts or materials to evaluate viability as required for new product development or ECR projects, including cost comparisons to existing equivalents and providing materials forecasts to the logistics department, as required for the implementation of long-lead-time items.

Prepare and ensure the BOM Specification is always correct and updated.

Complete critical quality checks during new part prototyping or ECR implementation on all moulds, parts and installations related to drawings which were allocated to the incumbent.

Full understanding on all system related designs, to name a few:

o Engine Installations

o Steering Installations

o Gas Installations

o Electrical / Digital switching Installation

o Airconditioning Installation

o Generator Installation

o Plumbing Installation

o Electronic Installation

Supporting Functions:



Support the Logistics & Stores Departments with BOM queries, workstation allocation, general explanation of part usage and explanations on expected part or material usage on new products whenever a risk of shortfalls or obsolescence may exist.

Support Warranty by providing technical feedback relating to warranty claims.

Support Commissioning by answering any technical or BOM related queries and performing quality checks during the implementation of new products or engineering changes.

Support Technical Purchasing by answering any technical queries.

Support Project Management by providing constant feedback on the status of work for new projects. This includes, but is not limited to drawings, CNC files, BOM packs, and quality checks.

Qualifications and Experience:



Ideal: BTech/B-degree (NQF Level 7) Engineering or related field.

Experience: 3 years design experience in boat building industry, plus engineering degree (or relevant boat/yacht design qualification).

Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.

Competencies:



Proven work experience within the marine electronics industry.

Familiarity with industry standards and certification requirements.

Working knowledge of AutoCAD and a basic knowledge of Catia/Solidworks/Rhino.

A Good knowledge of MS Office Programs.

Computer skills - MS Office, Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Project.

Self-disciplined to research and investigate new technologies and passion for yachting.

Good problem solving and analytical skills.

Ability to work in a team.

Excellent attention to detail.

Good organisational and communication skills.

Ability to systematically troubleshoot and problem solve.

Self-Motivated.

Ability to work under pressure and keep to strict deadlines.

Ability to read and draft electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics

A Basic knowledge of plumbing systems, mechanical systems, electronic systems, air-conditioning and ventilation systems (preferably in the marine/boat industry).

New Design Implementation and Support:

Understand new design/project scope and identify possible process improvement and optimisation initiative, as well as means of implementation.

Discuss new design/project with design department and relevant manufacturing support functions.

Bill of Material support and allocation sequencing

Identify possible risks involved with project relating to safety, time and quality.

Implement action plan for prototype build, for example: build methodologies, sequencing of assembly together with parts delivery.

Actively support the introduction of the build progress & provide feedback to design team and project management on any changes.

Identify possible process improvement and optimisation initiative, as well as means of implementation.

Review and update risks involved with project/design relating to safety, time and quality based on prototype in collaboration with project team.

Work with design and manufacturing departments to correct build issues and mitigate risks identified.

Set up a deliverables and immediate actions list for the roll out of design onto the production line, based on the prototype build.

Provide general assistance and guidance to manufacturing line to ensure successful introduction of new models.

Requirements



Proven track record in the Boat Building industry (5yrs+)

Good verbal and written communication

Effective business writing to report standard.

Problem solving abilities.

Excellent leadership.

Excellent Interpersonal attributes.

Advanced Microsoft applications (especially Excel).

Expert knowledge of boat building activities.

Full understanding of cross-functional interfaces with, and deliverables engineering, procurement - materials & sub-contracts, estimating, cost management, construction & commissioning, safety, quality, finance/accounting, and document controls.
