To lead, coordinate, and optimize all activities within the machine shop, including both conventional and CNC machining operations. The manager is responsible for ensuring efficient workflow, quality output, cost control, machine utilization, and workforce performance in line with production targets and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Production Planning and Control
Oversee daily machining operations and ensure optimal machine utilization.
Liaise with planning departments to ensure accurate job execution
Implement and provide insight on production schedules to optimise output and ensure timely delivery to internal and external customers
Monitor machining parameters, tool selections and programming.
Maintain up-to-date work instructions and SOPs for machines and processes
Monitor workflow and adjust resources or priorities as needed to achieve daily production targets
Monitor and continuous improvement of scrap rate.
2. Team Leadership
Manage and mentor machine shop supervisors, setters and operators.
Managed shift schedules
Provide training and performance evaluations.
Drive team engagement and skills development.
Promote a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.
3. Quality Assurance
Ensure machining processes meet quality specifications and adherence to tight tolerances.
Ensure 100% quality control at all machining operations
Collaborate with the Quality department to identify and resolve quality issues.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce scrap and rework.
4. Maintenance Coordination
Coordinate with maintenance for preventative and breakdown repairs.
Ensure machinery and equipment are in good working order.
Drive machine uptime and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) improvements.
Recommend and oversee upgrades to equipment
5. Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
Ensure OHSA compliance and promote a strong safety culture
Conduct risk assessments and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Ensure compliance with legal and company environmental and safety regulations.
6. Cost, Efficiency & WIP Control
Monitor production costs and identify areas for cost reduction
Control use of consumables, cutting tools, and raw materials.
Ensure WIP accuracy tracking of jobs.
Improve efficiency through lean manufacturing and 6S initiatives
7. Reporting and Communication
Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly production reports.
Participate in management meetings and contribute to strategic planning.
Communicate goals, expectations, and feedback effectively across shifts.
Minimum Qualifications:
National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering or equivalent.
Trade-tested Artisan (e.g., Fitter & Turner, Toolmaker) with management experience may be considered.
Experience:
8-10 years in a CNC/manual machining environment with close tolerance machining.
Minimum 3-5 years in a management role.
Experience with production planning software and ERP systems.
Key Competencies:
Strong knowledge of machining techniques, tolerances, materials, and tooling
In-depth knowledge of CNC, milling, turning, and grinding processes.
CNC programming and troubleshooting skills (FANUC, Siemens & Mitsubishi controls)
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and CAD models
Strong leadership and team-building capabilities.
Analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Sound understanding of Lean Manufacturing, 6S, and continuous improvement.
Proficient in MS Office, Excel, and ERP/MRP systems.
