Plastic Mold Specialist And Designer

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Job Description

A Plastic Injection Mold Designer and Technician are professionals involved in the design, development, and maintenance of plastic injection molds. Their roles are critical in the manufacturing industry, particularly in industries where plastic parts are produced through injection molding processes. Here's a breakdown of their responsibilities: * Plastic Injection Mold Designer:

  • Designing mold specifications: Mold designers work closely with product engineers or designers to understand the requirements of the plastic part to be manufactured. They then translate these requirements into detailed mold specifications, including dimensions, tolerances, gating systems, cooling channels, and ejection mechanisms.
  • CAD modeling and design: Using computer-aided design (CAD) software, mold designers create 3D models and detailed drawings of the injection molds. They ensure the molds are structurally sound, functionally efficient, and capable of producing high-quality plastic parts.
  • Material selection: Mold designers choose appropriate mold materials, such as steel or aluminum, based on factors like durability, cost, and the expected number of production cycles.
  • Collaboration with toolmakers: They collaborate with toolmakers or mold manufacturers to ensure the design feasibility and resolve any technical challenges that may arise during the manufacturing process.
  • Continuous improvement: Mold designers strive to improve mold designs by incorporating innovative features, enhancing production efficiency, and reducing manufacturing costs.
2. Plastic Injection Mold Technician: * Mold setup and preparation: Mold technicians are responsible for the setup and preparation of the injection molding machines. This includes installing the mold, connecting cooling and heating systems, and ensuring proper alignment and configuration of the mold components.
  • Process optimization: They optimize the injection molding process by adjusting parameters like temperature, pressure, and cycle time to achieve the desired quality, consistency, and efficiency of plastic part production.
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance: Mold technicians troubleshoot any issues that arise during the production process, such as defects in the molded parts, machine malfunctions, or mold damage. They conduct maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, lubricating, and repairing molds, to ensure their proper functioning.
  • Quality control and inspection: Mold technicians perform regular quality checks and inspections on the molded parts to ensure they meet the required specifications and quality standards. They may use measuring instruments and inspection tools to verify dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish.
  • Documentation and record-keeping: They maintain detailed records of mold setup parameters, process adjustments, maintenance activities, and production data. This documentation helps in tracking performance, troubleshooting recurring issues, and providing insights for process improvements.
Both the Mold Designer and Mold Technician work together to ensure the successful production of plastic parts through injection molding. The designer focuses on creating the mold design, while the technician handles the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the injection molding process using the designed mold.
