People Business Partner

based in Johannesburg to work at a soon to launch insurtech business that we are building in partnership with a leading media company.




We are building a digital insurance brokerage that provides South Africans with the personalized advice you need, without the spam. We leverage AI-driven and human expert advice to offer truly independent recommendations based on value, not just price. Our initial focus will be on insurance, but investments will be included shortly after launch and our vision is to grow beyond financial services to support clients with all their big decisions.


Backed by one of SA's largest media companies, this is a well-funded early-stage venture, with a serious competitive advantage and potential for scale. Launching in early 2025, this is an exciting opportunity to form part of the founding team to build a disruptive new business.

ABOUT THE ROLE




Our people are the foundation of our success. The People Business Partner is a key role responsible for building and executing our people strategy from launch to scale. This part-time position (approximately 20 hours per week) requires a strategic and hands-on approach to talent management, working closely with leadership to create a high-performance culture that attracts, develops, and retains top talent. The People Business Partner will report directly to the CEO and partner with department heads to drive business results through effective people practices to ensure the business delivers on its goals and becomes an employer of choice in the fintech space.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING



Partner with the CEO and leadership team to develop and execute our people strategy, aligning People initiatives with business objectives and growth plans. Design and implement scalable talent acquisition processes, including job design, candidate sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding programs. Develop and maintain competitive compensation and benefits frameworks that attract and retain top talent in a competitive market. Create and deliver performance management systems that drive high performance, including goal setting, regular feedback, and performance improvement processes. Build learning and development programs to upskill our team and support career progression as we scale. Establish and maintain employee engagement initiatives, including culture surveys, feedback mechanisms, and retention strategies. Provide coaching and support to managers on people management topics, including difficult conversations, team dynamics, and conflict resolution. Ensure compliance with all employment legislation and best practices, including Labour Relations Act, Employment Equity Act, and industry-specific regulations. Manage employee relations matters, including grievances, disciplinary processes, and workplace investigations. Develop and implement People policies and procedures that support a positive and productive work environment. Partner with department heads to conduct workforce planning and identify future talent needs as we grow. Establish People metrics and analytics to measure the effectiveness of people initiatives and inform data-driven decisions.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR



4+ years of experience as an People Business Partner or similar strategic role, preferably in a startup or high-growth environment. Strong understanding of South African employment law and compliance requirements. Experience with full-cycle talent acquisition, from job design to onboarding. Proven track record of developing and implementing performance management systems. Experience designing compensation and benefits frameworks in competitive markets. Strong business acumen with the ability to understand and support business objectives through people initiatives. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and influence at all levels. Experience coaching and developing managers on people management practices. Analytical mindset with experience using People metrics to drive decision-making. Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced startup environment. Experience in fintech, financial services, or regulated industries would be an advantage. Relevant degree or qualification preferred but not required.
