The Peer Navigator will be responsible for completing the clinic-based recruitment of approximately 50 adolescents for the PHOLA study, with the support and guidance of the Research assistant. The Peer Navigator will also be responsible for clinic relations, conducting screening, informed consent for contact, and full enrolment onto the trial, as well as the accurate completion of screening assessment procedures using electronic data collection. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the successful referral of participants into the study, as well as referrals for any Adverse Events and Serious Adverse Events identified during the recruitment and enrolment process. The incumbent will be an integral part of the team, taking on such tasks as required to assist as a back-up in the event of a staff shortage, under the guidance of the trial coordinator and to the extent that trial blinding is not compromised. The post will be based at the AHRI Somkhele. As mobility is vital for this position, the incumbent is required to drive a car. The incumbent will be required to work flexible hours.

  • Maintain effective relationships within the clinic setting to facilitate participant recruitment.
  • Offer daily regular group and one-on-one information sessions to all eligible adolescents attending clinic visits.
  • Conduct accurate eligibility screening and successfully recruit a target of 50 participants at primary clinics.
  • Conduct baseline and follow-up assessments including dried blood spot sample collection.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ethical standards in all consent, screening, and recruitment procedures, executing the trial protocol accurately.
  • Timely report all protocol violations, deviations, adverse events, and social harms to the Recruitment Supervisor, study team, and trial psychologist.
  • Facilitate data collection using paper forms and electronic devices (mobile/tablets) and manage data quality control for all recruitment and enrolment procedures.
  • Maintain the security and confidentiality of all relevant trial recruitment documentation.
  • Ensure full compliance with AHRI policies and procedures, utilizing the support of the Recruitment Supervisor.
Minimum requirements
  • National Senior Certificate
  • At least 1 years' experience in a relevant role
  • A valid driver's license
  • Fluent English and Zulu (written and spoken)
  • Must be attending HIV Standard of Care visits within KwaMashu Polyclinic, Cato Manor PHC, Kwadabeka CHC in Ethekwini or Mtubatuba and Somkhele Clinics in the uMkhanyakude
Minimum Experience
  • At least 3 years' data collection experience in a rural community
  • Experience of working in a research environment
  • Experience conducting behavioural assessments/questionnaires
  • Excellent electronic data collection and paper filing skills and experience
  • Prior GCP training an advantage (additional training will be provided as needed)
  • Previous experience working with adolescents, and in HIV services
  • Previous experience working in the healthcare system, preferably within ART treatment programmes
  • Previous experience of electronic data collection in the clinic setting
  • Knowledge of clinical trial methodology and GCP (GCP training will be provided prior to start)
Skills Required
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English and isiZulu.
  • Accuracy and precision.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
