A leading company in the retail sector is seeking a Payroll Manager to join their dynamic team and oversee the end-to-end payroll function across a large retail network.
This is a critical role that involves managing a high-volume payroll environment, processing approximately 120 payrolls and ensuring absolute accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. The Payroll Manager will work closely with HR and Finance teams, manage a dedicated payroll staff, and implement best practices to continuously improve the department.
As a Payroll Manager, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Lead and supervise the payroll team, assigning responsibilities and overseeing daily operations
  • Manage the full payroll cycle: from data collection and computation to processing and payment
  • Ensure accurate processing of all employee lifecycle events: appointments, promotions, terminations, and transfers
  • Review and authorize payroll payments, reconciliations, and statutory returns
  • Liaise with HR and Finance to validate employee data and cost allocations
  • Ensure all payroll activities are fully compliant with company policy and legal standards
  • Handle submissions to SARS, including loading payments and processing returns
  • Prepare and submit reports for medical aid, retirement annuity contributions, and other payroll-related deductions
  • Provide comprehensive payroll reports and analysis to senior management
  • Continuously improve payroll systems and procedures for maximum efficiency
  • Train, mentor, and monitor the performance of the payroll team
  • Resolve payroll-related queries and discrepancies in a timely manner
Qualifications and Requirements:
Proven experience in managing large-scale payroll operations
Strong knowledge of Sage 300 and proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Solid understanding of payroll legislation and best practices in South Africa
Previous experience managing a team and improving processes
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
High attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational skills
A solution-driven mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
