The purpose of this role is to Operate and control the equipment and processes relating to the collection, transportation, registration, preparation and analyses of samples to ensure operational objectives are achieved safely and cost-effectively.

Kumba Iron Ore
We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects - exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

As our Operator Gr1 Laboratory of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety, Health, and Environment
  • Adhere to all health and safety practices requirements and promote good housekeeping to ensure compliance and an environment where team members can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • Active participation in safety initiatives, i.e., SLAM and HPH.
  • Conduct the required safety interventions before undertaking any tasks.
  • Ensure a clear working area and the legibility and visibility of safety signs; attend to spillage material to prevent contamination and pollution; and keep a record of actions taken.
  • Active participation in VF's Risk Assessments, and closed-out of Safety Actions.
  • Safely operate and control equipment/vehicles/equipment, components or materials as instructed.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Sample Analysis and Process Monitoring
  • Collect, transport, register, prepare, and analyse all sample types to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results.
  • Initiate remedial actions within your responsibility and report defects and deviations to the appropriate person for corrective actions.
  • Monitor the laboratory process to meet production requirements, ensuring continuous equipment and related machinery inspection to optimise utilisation and availability and maximise throughput.
  • Identify and report process deviations, equipment failures, and potential risks to the supervisor for effective decision-making, action planning, and problem resolution.
  • Reporting
  • Verify and validate reported test results to comply with required standards and timelines.
  • Operate the information management system to ensure timely availability of test results to all stakeholders.
  • Promptly inform relevant personnel about process events, equipment behaviour, and general activities to ensure transparency and enable decision-making.
  • Ensure that communication is clear, whether verbal or written.
  • Quality Control
  • Validate equipment by performing quality checks at required intervals and record results for necessary rectification.
  • Submit quality control samples at designated intervals and document data to meet Laboratory Quality System requirements.
  • Record non-conformances to the Laboratory Quality System to track cases and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Equipment Validation and Maintenance
  • Validate and conduct first-line maintenance on equipment according to SOPs, WIs, and quality system standards for optimal performance.
  • Report maintenance needs to your supervisor for timely remedial actions to ensure optimal equipment performance and availability.
  • Ensure the operating environment and conditions conform to supplier specifications and quality system requirements to limit deviations and prevent potential equipment damage. Report any deviations to your supervisor for remedial action.
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance promptly during breakdowns or shutdowns to minimise production impact.
  • Compliance
  • Adhere to Anglo American compliance requirements and ensure compliance with the team.
  • Conduct site inspections to identify and escalate non-compliance.
  • Implement required actions.
  • Assistance:
  • Assist the supervisor and co-workers.
  • Assist in the absence of the responsible person.
  • Assist within your level and area of competence.
  • Assist in alignment with KIO policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Operate support equipment within the processing environment (when applicable).
This role is in Processing (PRO) department on a band P5 level reporting to the Supervisor LAB
Qualifications
  • Grade 12/N3
  • SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of manual and automated laboratory operations acquired through 2 years of experience.
  • Understand laboratory-specific equipment and processes, including both manual and automated tools.
  • Familiarity with handling chemical substances safely.
  • Awareness of shift inspection procedures and their importance.
  • Comprehension of lock-out procedures to ensure safety.
  • Insight into safety standards applicable in laboratory settings.
  • Understand company policies and procedures that govern laboratory practices.
  • Proficiency in computer systems, including MS Office, Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and automated laboratory control systems.
  • Knowledge of safety, health, and environmental regulations and legislative, statutory, and regulatory requirements
