Job Purpose
CPUT libraries is expanding its resource base through the acquisition of physical and electronic content as well as the development of repositories for inter alia research output, research data, and Open educational resources.





This position will need to take responsibility for the provision of bibliographic and metadata support for the repositories, as well as other electronic and physical resources. In order to do this the incumbent will be expected to do the following:


Original and descriptive cataloguing and classification of monographs, serials, electronic resources and digital content in accordance with the latest editions of AACR, LCSH, DDC, RDA in MARC 21 format or selected metadata standards where appropriate. Develop and streamline procedures and workflows for original and complex copy cataloguing of electronic resources, including repository resources, online journals, electronic books, databases and integrating websites, representing varying levels of difficulty, subjects, languages and formats. Manipulate metadata to provide multiple access points for library information resources regardless of location or format. Seek opportunities for collaborative efforts within Library Technical services and beyond to enhance and broaden metadata operations. Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide metadata support and services to facilitate access and discoverability of the institutions digitized, born-digital and print content through metadata creation, enrichment and maintenance. Develop and provide training for library staff regarding resource description and metadata management. Develop and apply expertise in linked data, semantic web applications and ontologies for discovery of bibliographic data and information. Serve as a Metadata consultant to larger library projects /initiatives. Solve problems arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic and holdings records. Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
B.Bibl degree OR equivalent 4-year Library & Information Science qualification (B.Inf Hons, PGDLis) with; Three years' Cataloguing or Metadata support services experience within a Higher Education library environment.





Prerequisite for the post:




Three years' Cataloguing or Metadata support services experience. Knowledge of AACRII, LCSH, DDC23, MARC 21, RDA & Dublin Core. Proficiency with Alma, Primo, SabiCAT and WorldCat. Working knowledge of library digital platforms ie. DSpace, FigShare, ATOM etc. Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
Original and complex copy cataloguing of physical, electronic and digital content using international rules, standards and systems. Support MARC-based descriptive cataloguing while providing a variety of Metadata services needed to meet discovery needs in evolving digital and physical environments. Maintain the library's digital repositories and digitized collections including developing, implementing, and managing workflows for creating & maintaining electronic resources metadata, and ensuring accessibility of content. Monitor, maintain and upgrade bibliographic-, item- and holdings records on the Library management system and WorldShare. Provide metadata services to the library's special collections. Provide input into cataloguing and metadata guidelines and procedures. Participate in the creation, identification, prioritization and implementation of cataloguing and metadata projects.
